Timelessness and the block universe

Fucks up your Big Bang thread then dunnit.

well Fridgemagnet already did that :(

but i dont think so, i dont believe in the big bang, i was just comparing the scientific first cause to the religious first cause

maybe the block universe IS the big bang, with God sitting outside it looking at it from above

abscence of coherent thought

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all life thou givest to both great and small;
In all life thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish but nought changeth thee.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud we would render: O help us to see
'Tis only the splendour of light hideth thee.

Leibniz argued for an entirely determinate universe in which each monad was directly controlled by God.

Or something. It was a while ago since I read Leibniz

but memories very much lack the vividness of the present

If you have a bad memory it is because your subconscious is very busy being selective. Doesn't mean the memory isn't vividly present.

we live in the present just because we have such bad memories

The present becomes the past the very moment it is the present.

salaam.

oh right i did not realise monads were connected with determinism

but i love the idea of monads as the basic 'unit' of existence

What does the block universe model posit the first cause to be?

It is pretty interesting, actually. I wrote one of my best essays about Leibniz.

You should have a read about it all, I think you will find it pretty interesting as well.
