Tim Westwood Radio 1: WTF?!

red rose said:
I love watching him on Pimp My Ride (my brothers got me into this) He says stuff like 'macked out' and 'bling-ed up' and it sounds about as cool as if my dad said that.

He's fucking awful on Pimp My Ride. Whoever chose him to present it needs shooting. I was looking forward to the UK version as i've been watching the US one with Xzibit for a while. If Westwood wasn't so crap it's be funny...

i remember the first time i heard his show on the bbc ('95 i think) i couldnt believe it, took me a couple of shows to realise he wasnt taking the piss
he is a wanker, he has done a lot for rap in this country, but i'm sure there's others who could do a lot better

i thought exactly the same......couldnt believe someone could possibly be that much of a twat without it being a pisstake....

has anyone got the interview he did with krs 1 i have been trying to find it for ages and just can't. It was fucking funny.

As I said, I've got it on tape somewhere, but really haven't got the inclination to sort through my bin bags of unmarked tapes. :o

But if I ever do find it, I'll let you know!

All the proper hip hop fans I know completely respect his knowledge of hip hop, and the amount of effort he puts into what he does.

They also all agree that he's a prick.

THe man is absolutely dedicated and broke rap in the UK, fighting against much hating that was around in the industry in the eighties. Works HAAARD, and hasnt stopped since day one...like him or not, he is a legend.

Getting to introduce Public Enemy on "Nation of Millions..." is a claim to fame in itself... Co-founder of Kiss Fm...The fact that he has survived to this day is a testament to his dedication.

Is he embaressing...yeah, but: Thats REALLY HIM!!! - its not fake -he lives it! - let him have the benefit of the doubt

pass me a copy and I'll digitise it :)

.

I have the tricknology to digimatize the thingamibobs. :D

A friend of mine has recently completed doing that with all his old tapes, tidying up, hiss-reducing and EQ-ing them as he went...

Personally, I think life's too short to bother attempting that with hundreds of them. :)

Well, he is nudging 50...
He was still claiming to be 27 when he was 45, so I've heard. Despite the fact that he started broadcasting in about 1982. How sad?

I also remember reading a feature about him having had a few caps put in his ass after a gig at Home or somewhere. Pretentious, narcissistic filth in my very humble. :)

Go KRS-One!

His actual age was shrouded in mystery for many years. It shouldn't really matter how old somebody is, but he obviously seems to have felt that he had to keep quiet about it.

According to Wikipedia, he was born in 1958.

Well, exactly.

Why the shame? The man would still be an embarrassment if he were 19. On the other hand, Peel was 65 when he left us and would still have been cooler than the rest if he'd been 180 IMO.

Age isn't really the issue though. (-Good luck to him; none of us are getting any younger!)

The issue is that Westwood (-or more specifically, his on-air persona) is frankly ludicrous. That's the main reason he's so widely ridiculed.

:)

He;s just turned into a bit of a walking cliche. Not worthy of any hatred though.

Was well respected in the 80s though. If the thing about his shooting is true (because he refused to pay protection money) then all power to him.

apparently, after spending months working with co-actors that weren't really there on Roger Rabbit, Bob Hoskins would find himself talking to non-existent people on the bus. he went batshit.

so if you do anything for long enough, i'm sure you're no longer faking it and it becomes who you are.

but so what? now he's REALLY a twat rather than pretending to be one?

even when he got shot, he tried to get real mileage out of it, boost his image and ego related to how fucking real he was.

in the end, turns out they were after his driver.

i don't dispute that he champions hip hop in this country, but anybody who thinks it wouldn't have happened without him is mental. Hip Hop is the most successful music genre in the world, has been for a decade probably. do you really think the UK would have resisted it without Westwood saying 'aiight' and coming out with some really dodgy homophobic shit on his shows?

he does seem to get some respect from the big US hiphoppers.

hmm, that's all i can think of to say about him.

the man is a joke. look upon his works, ye mighty, and tremble.

I did say if thankfully regarding the shooting.

I don't think anyone would dispute the second part but then thats the same with any imported American music.

I don't listen to his show so is the homophobic stuff his words or the records?

nor me, but i'm reliably informed he used to pretend to out rappers considered a bit 'light on their feet'. i'll google.. :)

Never heard about that. But that is something like what Hot 97 in New York used to do.

Strange.

His knowledge of his favoured genre and his workrate are second to none.

Still, he's got a funny accent and is middle-aged now so let's all rip the piss out of him eh? 'Cos that's what really matters.

oh, don't be an arse. nobody is mocking a funny accent or his age.

we're mocking an ENTIRELY AFFECTED AND INAUTHENTIC vocal pretension and someone who consistently lies about their age.

not the same thing and it's disingenuous of you to claim it is.

the issue has always been whether he was actually supporting UK hiphop...

Eventually it got to him and he tried harder to have british guests and play UK music. I recall people I knew revising their opinions - whereas before they criticised him as a tool of US cultural takeover they began to respect him when they saw he could help them.

A strangely powerful man really

Anytime he has uttered the words 'Keeping it real' or 'repping my ends' then he invites this on himself.

Sorry but a 40plus man boasting on Radio 1 about lapdancers in his hummer is a sad cunt.
