Thyroid Calcification

Well-Known Member
Anyone got any experience of this?

Had some x-rays last week, by back specialist and he's said before he sorts my back out I need to go to my doctor and get a CT scan as he reckons he can see this.....

I have not really heard of thyroid "calcification" before, what is the effect of this? My mum had thyroid issues and had I believe to take thyroxine but I don't know precisely what was wrong with her thyroid. I have also had reason to get mine tested in the past.

The Internet says that 10% of thyroid calcification are cancerous, though very treatable. That obviously a little concerning

Well what I do know is that if your thyroid is underactive you can suffer from tiredness and lack of energy, as to what calcification might do to your thyroid action I have no idea.

I can quite see that any potential for cancer could be very alarming but you don't know how long your thyroid has been like this, it could have taken many many years to get to today's state.

I think if your doctor thought it might be urgent he would have booked you an urgent scan, when is the scan scheduled Yelkcub? Anyhow, I suppose you don't really have a choice, you will just have to have your scan and then see what they say.

Chiropractor showed me on an x-ray today and has told me to see my doctor, which I intend on doing tomorrow....

Great that you can see your doctor so quickly.
I needed to see mine about 3 weeks ago, today was the first time I got to see him :(

8 o'clock phone call from the mobile while standing at the reception normally works. It always engaged, so if they say you have to call I say 'I am' and put it on speaker...

I had a go at my doctor about it today, basically if I need to see him it will be important and need a relatively quick response. He has added some notes to my file and told me if I do need him I should get myself added to a list of people he must call back. The receptionist didn't mention anything about that, even that such a list existed - she just fobbed me off with a distant appointment.

Saw the doctor at 10 this morning, bloods at 11.20, paying for a private ultrasound tonight. Doctor said thyroid cancer is really rare but best to be sure. NHS ultrasound was going to be a few weeks.

Good that you were able to get to the doctor so quickly.

Do you mind me asking how much the private ultrasound is going to cost?
Just ignore it if you would rather not say.

No worries - £252.

Yeah, had the doctors appointment number on redial ready for when they open the lines at 8, got engaged tone a few times but when I got through they were pretty keen when I explained. Bloods were and hour later at a hospital 20 mins away.

A great show from the NHS all round apart from the wait for the ultrasound, so had to go elsewhere (not real Urbanz, blates!)

What did your Dr have to say about the calcification? what does it mean, what is it caused by? I had a quick look on line about it yesterday but couldnt really see anything relevant

Said she couldn't say much without the ultrasound, but it's unlikely to be cancer...

Ultrasound shows nothing wrong whatsoever. Bloke reckoned both the chiropractor and GP should have known from the x-ray that a) it was just normal calcification of tissue/ligaments in someone my age, it wasn't in the thyroid and if it was and was cancerous, it wouldn't be the type you could see on an x-ray.

So, a complete waste of £250, but at least there's nothing wrong.

Why didn't I know that chiropractor's have about as much medical knowledge as me. If I'd known it was 'complementary medicine' I would have avoided. Gah!

Oh well, at least there is no problem.. but as you say, £250 .. :hmm:

The ultrasound chap was very apologetic, said if he'd known a chiropractor was the original source of the diagnosis he would have told me to save my money. GP probably thought I believed in quackery and didn't want me complaining if she said it was bollocks.

The chiropractor ordered x-rays? Haven't heard of that before. Did you take the x-rays to the GP as well then? Maybe you should ask her about your back pain(or whatever you were seeing the chiropractor for), she might be able to refer you for physio if you have long standing back pain.
I would also ask your doctor how normal it is to get calficiation of the ligaments, you're in your 30s right? I don't think it is common to get alcification at that age and you might have an underlying endocrine imbalance so might be worth having some bloods done.

The chiropractor did the x-rays at the cost of £45. And tried to get me to sign up for 18 sessions. My missus had been there and I smelt a rat when they told her she needed to book 24 sessions, but I'd already booked my consultation so I went anyway. Then, the whole scare made my put my suspicions aside for a bit.

It's a full on scam.

Had bloods done this morning.

Ach, what a swizz. I've never been to a chiropractor but I can't say I've heard many good things about the profession. I am totally on board with complimentary therapies and I wouldn't dismiss them all as quackery but that sounds shady alright.
Hope your bloods come back good.

chiropractors for the most part are really great for chronic pain stuff. I don't know why they get such a bad rap in the UK. And yes, chiropractors often do take x-rays. since their work is generally to do with the skelatal-muscular system it does make sense. However, though they do have to go to medical school and learn the basics, they are not qualified to diagnose internal medical problems.
Sorry you had his bad experience Yelkcub, but glad you're ok. :)
