HDIF Presents XIX
Band Of Holy Joy/The Rosie Taylor Project/The Crisps/Roadside Poppies
Thursday June 21st
Brixton Windmill
7.30pm, £5

Band Of Holy Joy
One of the many classic indiepop bands conceived in the Eighties, South London's Band Of Holy Joy have been described as "pop deviants inside the urban wasteland", with good reason. Their gloriously romantic blend of indie, folk and the blood red poetry of singer Johny Brown drew comparisons to Bertolt Brecht and Jacques Brel, while their 1989 Rough Trade album, "Manic Magic Majestic", remains a landmark recording for fans of outsider art you can dance to.

The Rosie Taylor Project
A five piece from Leeds, The Rosie Taylor Project marry the atmospheric alt-country of My Morning Jacket and Iron And Wine with the romantic indiepop of The Clientele and Camera Obscura. In fact, this date will seem them fresh from a support slot with Tracyanne and company. Check out the gorgeous "Maps For Lost Lovers" on their myspace page for proof of their magnificence.

The Crisps
Booked not only because they're called The Crisps, which has to be one of the greatest band names in the history of pop, but because this north London four piece sound like Orange Juice picking out heartbreak on second hand ukeleles, which has to be one of the greatest concepts in the history of pop. If you have room in your heart for Herman Dune, Jonathan Richman and the like, then you'll adore this lot.

Roadside Poppies
Some bands are complete strangers to us, booked because we like the sound of a demo and the cut of their gib. Others - like The Darlings last year - are old friends, who've just happened to start making music. Roadside Poppies frontman Matloob has been a regular at the HDIF Presents shows for a couple of years now, so we're delighted to be putting on his swoonsome indiepop fivesome.

Where do they fly over from?

Nu Yoik. I was talking to the guy last night.
Good to meet you too...hope you got back in time as they kept going and going. One hour set I reckon.

I left about 11.40 during the third encore. Not sure how much I missed.

Many thanks to Twisted and Ianw for putting this on.

I don't think Innit enjoyed it - she left after 2 songs!

I didn't leave because I wasn't enjoying it - I had to get up early for work and Mr Innit had to get up at 5am to go to Glastonbury! I'm half asleep as it is :(
