Three to go down?

tbh i bet half the people who are saying 'oh i hope newcastle go down the wankers' are the same people going 'i've always had a soft spot for newcastle' 10 years ago

wankers

Don't you think there should be some sort of punishment for how badly Newcastle United are actually being run?

You've got a massive gate every week, you get rid of decent managers and pay them fuck loads in the process (£6m, the cost of a decent player in Big Sam's case) or sometimes shit managers (eg Souness), whilst clubs like Wigan, Hull and once upon a time Charlton, are able to come up and play better football on a fraction of the budget.

Everyone liked Newcastle ten years ago, because how can you not, they had a philosophy of good attacking football and were lead by a very genuine and decent manager, and no supporters should have to go through losing successive cup finals. Now you're a picture of everything that's wrong in football.

well to be honest i don't think anyone would say we don't deserve to go down. i totally agree that the club has been run like a shambles and has been getting away with it for far too long

what pisses me off is all these twats are now crawling out of the woodwork about how the fans are idiots for wanting the team to win and still turning up in numbers every week despite us being shit etc

ok so the various supporters action groups never managed to have any effect on the board, and yes it is stupid how every time some new saviour is appointed you still get 1000 people turn up outside the ground to scream at them. but i think newcastle has a good set of fans, much rather that sort of blind optimism than shit like chelsea or man utd who sometimes have a half empty stadium for league games

i'm not saying newcastle don't deserve to go down i'm saying the fans aren't to blame, and they definetely don't deserve stick for bothering to support the club and expecting us to be a good team with the amount of support and funds the club has

Everyone liked Newcastle ten years ago because they were the rivals of Man Utd, not because of any widespread appreciation of and love for Geordie Nation or the way they played football.

Now other clubs have come along to challenge Utd (Arse) and/or be as hated as Utd are (RS / Chelsea) , a more realistic appraisal of NUFC can be formed - which admittedly seems largely to be composed of laughing at the prospect of their demise.

newcastle were never rivals of man utd. we nearly won the title once but we just don't have the same money as them and we don't have alex ferguson (if we had bobby robson when he was a bit younger and given him 10 years who knows....)

it was a popular club with neutrals because we were playing good football. especially in contrast to liverpool and man utd who were more succesful but were much less enjoyable to watch. now newcastle has gone to shit and most fans would agree we are shit at the moment, but that isn't because the fans are over-enthusiastic it's because the corrupt board which ran it into the ground has been replaced by a completely clueless board who finished it off

i think it's a credit to the fans for continuing to support the club even tho it's been going to shit for years. it probably won't be full every week if we go down and don't manage to bounce back up, but it will still be one of the best supported clubs in the country and i think that's a good thing

i'd much rather be a newcastle fan than a chelsea fan despite how shit we are cos they can't even fill their stadium when they are on to win the premier league

if spurs got relegated they would be able to fill thier stadium i reckon.

dave

we've got a much bigger stadium than them tho

i don't mind spurs so much. they are a bit like a less extreme version of newcastle. they always provide a couple of laughs every season and always win their last few games and reckon they'll be top 4 next year....

People like the Newcastle team that should have won the title because it was so exciting. And of course because they weren't Man U.

The trouble is that it was after this that things got really out of hand with the Best Supporters In The World malarkey.

People liked Newcastle twenty years ago (my first game there was in 1989, I think) because they were widely perceived to be knowledgeable and keen supporters who were enormously short-changed by a tightfisted board. Because the Gallowgate was still an open terrace long after it should have had a roof (see comments about board and short-changing). Because they had number nines like George Reilly and Billy Whitehurst. And because those in the know found out that Newcastle as good place to go long before it was Party City.

Anyway, the point is that once Newcastle had got back to being keen supporters short-changed by the board, the view of other supporters had changed because of all the hype and because it had become clear that Newcastle were also one of those clubs whose supporters invite you to agree that they're a bigger and better club that yours. So, you know, down they go.

i was hoping when ashley bought the club that whole keegan wonderland thing would finally be over. then he appoints keegan ffs then shearer

hopefully this will be an end to all that keegan wonderland bollocks. although a lot of that is created by the media. when you watch sky sports and match of the day they go around all the grounds in the country getting dafties to act daft to show this 'football mania' bollocks. newcastle fans fit that very well so they do that a lot those fat drunk geordies with their funny voices etc . if you actually go to the games it's just people who love their club

we aren't down yet anyway. if we can win our 3 home games i reckon we'll stay up, it's just that thing where noone can remember what it's like to win a game, . this is our last chance but we aren't finished just yet. if we get 3 points against portsmouth it'll look a lot better

agreed with this, it's stupid for people to accuse your fans of being gloryhunters and then also attack them for turning up even when the team is shit.

I suppose. Anyway, I don't particularly want them to go down. Even though I quite like Newcastle as a place, it's still quite a rundown city in many parts and it's quite obvious that the team is the city in the way that doesn't really apply to any team in London really, even arsenal or whatever.

I'd rather boro went down tbh

TBF, if you lot weren't so incredibly shit, we wouldn't call ourselves the best fans in the world. I mean you're pathetic. I can't believe you even call yourselves football fans (well, apart from JTG).

revol68 is 10 times the "fan" you are and he's not been to Old Trafford once. Did you have your DNA base sequences changed so that they read as the abbreviation of your team? Did you fuck, you silly muppet.

Anyway, back to the Toon. I think it's also possible that a lot of changing perceptions are due to he Premiership. This is partly because since Sky starting covering football everything gets hyped out of all proportion and this includes the Best Fans In The World business. So it gets on people's nerves all the while. But I think it's more because After the Premiership there was no ore all-in-this-together, it became much more the Big Teams versus the Rest, and when you had a club which considered itself in the first category, fans of the other clubs weren't really interested in them - apart from seeing them lose.

That's a sizeable oversimplification, but I think it's an important element.
