Ooh very natty. Doesn't it twist the doobrywotsits though?
The doobrywotsits are like fixed metal cleats on my boots - but yeah, it wouldn't work so well on cloth or leather "lugs" (which I now know is what they are called). For those, I think I'd be tempted by ...

Thanks to this site, I now know that I've been tying my laces wrong all these years. They don't come undone if you do it properly. There's also a brilliant way of doing it right in one quick movement - it's great!

I've just tried that knot and I can't get it at all.

Life is too short to spend it worrying about trying to shave seconds off your shoelace tying time...

I couldn't relearn how to do it properly using the two-step method so I resorted to the quick way - it's really easy once you get it. I've been randomly retying my boot* all day just for kicks. :o

The secure knot is easy too - but not so elegant to perform.

*just the one boot - I'm not actually wearing them or anything. :o

:p

Suddenly I'm deeply dissatisfied by the criss cross lacing on my new trainers... and what's more I've just realised that my old trainers are done up with sawtooth lacing, and I never noticed or bothered to change it all these years.

After much swearing, stamping and throwing of Para boots, I've finally managed to do a passable "Ian Knot".

Now all I have to do is programme it into my subconcious and replace 24 years of normal lacing

It's marvellous isn't it! I'm thoroughly addicted, and planning to show everyone I see for the next few days. I shall have to carry a lace with me especially as I'm not wearing lace-ups in this heat ...

Ruby - the key is getting the loops right (loose ends to the back and front, loops together in the middle) and then just pull them through each other. I can't link the vital picture because it's too big for hotlinking (for the sake of his bandwidth) but it's Step 3 here.

Just one problem.

In brand new trainers with gleaming white laces, done up with neat European straight lacing and a pristine Ian knot.... I look a complete twat.

Ooh - he's got an animated version of the "Ian Knot" instructions here.

Congrats!

This is precisely why I don't like straight across lacing all the way. It just looks too neat.

This double helix lacing might look cool on trainers (if you do them as mirror images). Easy to tighten/loosen too.
