This One Time At Bandcamp

I like the fact you can choose what quality on bandcamp too, including flac.

Only problem with it is because you have to upload good quality in the first place, and the preview stream is the full quality upload and the full song, a lot of artists are going off it, because people are just ripping the previews.
I think if people are going to bother ripping a preview then they are always going to find some way of getting it for free, even without the preview stream. Basically people just don't have to pay for music anymore, you have to rely on honesty and goodwill.... the only way to make sure noone can get your music for free is to never put it out anywhere, which means that noone will ever hear it.

I'd agree with that...... the internet has totally shat on any oppurtunity for smaller time creatives to gather any money from their skills.

I'd say that the internet has provided a lot of opportunities to make money, with a bit initiative, and if you make music that people actually want (and feel like supporting, is the key). I think the problem is bedroom "artists" (or hobby bands or whatever) feeling entitled to money just for knocking up a tune on their laptop and uploading it... noone will pay for that, noone has ever paid for that!

I do think music ought to be cheaper.

That includes the cost of making music too.

Really? I can certainly think of some acts like that, but most I know tend to be the opposite - they upload for free because they don't think anyone will pay, and end up making nothing because once it's out for free, nobody's going to pay for it.

While we're on the subject, what IS a fair amount to pay? £1 per song? £5 per album?

Yeah everything ought to be free and we ought to all be fed peeled grapes by robot slaves that run on sunlight and good thoughts. Why didn't god make the world like this, get your robot slave to write a letter of complaint to him.
That's a super straw man, but how about you answer what I actually said?

The answer is just "it depends". You are always going to able to hear it for free, so an artist needs to create some kind of reason for people to give money. A nice physical package? Some "exclusive" thing? A loyalty that makes people want to support the artist (that's probably the key to it, whatever else they do)? Auctions of stuff? Crowdfunding? working and doing music on the side? there are tons of ways to do it but you can't just upload something sit back and expect money to come in

It also depends on what has gone into it. Like, if you have done a quadruple concept album involving a chamber orchestra, a troupe of African drummers and recorded it at Abbey Road I think it's fair to charge a bit more than some twat banging out another acid techno number in fruity loops in his bedroom.

I'm going to make a wild stab in the dark and guess that you're not a musician.

Yes, but as i said it should be cheaper all round to make music. Instruments can be grossly overpriced because of labels and brands. Studio time, recording gear, computers and software, all absurdly overpriced.

I am all in favour of abolishing the current way in which the world is organised and creating something new and fairer.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need - that sort of thing.

OH yeah. But don't start with something that people can ALREADY get for free!!
