i've tried to read all the thread but may have missed someone making this point.
the reason the trains in Spain can make up so much time is becasue they don't have to make anything like the same amount of stops as they do in the UK.
The East Coast mainline you're lucky to get to Edinburgh only stopping at Peterborough, Doncaster, York and Newcastle. Whereas in Spain Madrid to Barcelona will only stop three or four times. How would you decide which cities deserved high speed stops?
The book you refer to was written by a chap (Steve Poole) who I used to work with - I can vouch for the veracity of the stories as they were all narrated to me over various times. Top man - who writes it - as it was ! (no one else has documented in such a way what it was like for the aspirant young managers in the nationalised industry.
He is still around and I got the book autographed the other year.
