This is England....

Dunno just had it highly recommended, then 4 of us sat down to watch it and were all really disappointed, other than the laughing at yet another walking scene coming on.

I'm glad it's not just me, then.

The main reason I disliked it was because 'Made In Britain' said it all about 25 years previously and had the benefit of being relevant at the time.

'Dead Man's Shoes' was fucking great, though.

Not a fan.
touchy feely skinheads who are all shocked when someody uses the term 'paki'?
Pur-lease. And fash-skins were very much pro-falklands.

I was about 13 in 1982 and knew a lot of skins. whilst they were not all nazis, casual racism and violence was very much the norm. The only exception were the polticised sharp skins - who took on the far right but were very much a minority within the movement.

I like mos tof meadows work, but this film felt like a devised youth theatre project using actors who had no real understanding of the time it was set in.

Yeah it really compares badly to made in britain.

I've not seen 'Made In Britain' for years so I'd imagine it looks a bit dated now but it was really full-on at the time. Tim Roth was genuinely scary and like a lot of decent drama it raised more questions than answers. I taped it (I was about 13 or something when it came out) and I kept going back and watching it again and again. It was a good one for widening the generation gap, too. Various hippy modern parents I knew couldn't handle it at all. :D

This Is England is the worst of the Romeo, Dead Mans and TIE, triumverate.

By the time This Is England came out, it was just another Meadows film where a kid walks about his little town for a bit and then some bigger bloke goes mental at the end. It's the Meadows formula.
