This is England- On TV next week

yes, i'm looking forward to seeing it again. good characterisation imo, although some slightly dodgy plotline devices. i thought woody was written out too easily half way thru, for eg.

I thought that was a bold move by Meadows- introduce characters so likeable you'd happily watch a whole film about them, and then move on from them.. It was unsettling

I just felt that it didn't ring true, in the context of the way that his character had previously revealed himself and the way he had acted towards the young lad. Minor quibbles really, tbh, and i agree that it certainly unsettled me, particularly in the final scenes, nowhatimean?

but it think there's a case for sayng that meadows takes an easy way out when dealing with why some skins were 'bad'. They are all redeemed here, apart from one who has some almost deus ex machina psych issues at the end.

some skins were horrible, racist cunts and stayed horrible - and it wasn't because of their traumatic childhoods. But this film kind of implies differently.

this is what i thought, but got shouted down and told i had several chips on my shoulder  :D cos i used to hate skinheads in my teenage years and had a few encounters with them.

whoever it was who said 'Scum it ain't' up there was so right. Scum imo depicts that time for me more than this film.

saying all this, i did think it was good, and definitely worth watching.

I think it's truly magnificent film. Almost unbearable to watch sometimes, after getting so emotionally involved with the characters, the awkwardness of scenes like Combo's first speech with the whole gang in the room made you feel like you were there with them. I love Einaudi's piano pieces in it too. Meadows is a genuinely brilliant director.

Why can't a 40 year old do any of that? You're a narrow minded shit if you think it's wrong somehow to have a shaved head or ride a skateboard when you're 40

I liked it, there's a few things slightly out of place but it didn't spoil it.

I've said it before but the relationship between Shaun and Smell is entirely believable speaking as someone who was the same age at the time and spent a few afternoons with 2 girls in the 5th year.

As for Made In Britain, I never really think of it as a skinhead film. Other than Trevor being a skin and a racist it has no reference to skinhead culture. More a film about an angry teenager lashing out against the system. I'd love to see a current film made about a 'Trevor' type of kid.

Good film but should have been set a few years earlier. By 1983 everyone was into the casual scene. There were still a few skinheads around but they were mainly into far right politics & the association with ska music had disappeared. Had it been set in say 1969 when the skinhead scene first came happened & the scene was all about clothes, music & football it would have been more realistic. I await the first film about the 1980's casual scene. Well one that hopefully does not descend into Football Factory farce.

Not quite the period you're on about Andy, but Awaydays should be out some time this year. From what I've seen so far it's looking pretty good.

Stephen Graham's in it too, which links nicely into the subject of this thread. I liked This Is England, but for me it didn't quite hit the spot. Considering we've got such a rich history of youth cults, from mod to skin to punk to rude boy to casual, we are sadly lacking in quality films about any of them.

Liked Sampsons book hope the film is as good. Saw him do a reading of one of his books about the fella who likes scat and gets the showercap and showerhead in on the job, I was weelping in tears.....

Only thing's about Awaydays is who'll play Elvis and will he actually film the scenes in Crewe at the Royal Hotel and on Gresty Road!?

The biggest complaint I have of the film is the clothes, lack of tonics, sta prest, well creased Levi 501's. Even the 1979 revival skins knew the importance of style and sharp clothes.

Just finished watching it. I was very impressed. It was hard to watch in parts. But this is the sort of film that Britain makes brilliantly, ever since the late 50s-early 60s.

We only embarrass ourselve swhen we try to copy Hollywood.

Wasn't Awaydays made for TV years ago? Fairly sure I have it on video somewhere.

No, you might be thinking of Arrivederci Millwall.

Awaydays is based on Kevin Sampson's book of the same name, set in 1979 in Birkenhead/Liverpool.

The opening lines of the NF organiser's speech which go something like "There is a word I hardly dare mention. That word is 'England' " is borrowed from a speech by Winston Churchill.

There are some scenes where the lads hug each other in an emotional let-your-feelings-show way. That was unrealistic, blokes weren't at all touchy feely then. They weren't like Big Brother contestants. The only time lads like that would have made physical contact would be during play-fighting or for arms-round-shoulders herbert singalongs while pissed.

As per Fedayn's post above, the clothing wasn't quite right. But quite enjoyed it when I first saw it nonetheless.

Thought it was a good film overall but have to agree with previous posters about the clothing and the touchy feely hugs the guys were giving each other. Recognized a few characters from my school years though, the twats lol. Wasn't convinced by the young lad Sean and his 'girlfriend', didn't settle well with me. Disturbing ending too but you could see it coming. Not enough music for me, wanted more of a soundtrack to really capture that time but i thought it was very watchable and took me back to that scary time as a 15 year old.

i enjoyed many of the scenes, but was a little underwhelmed with the film as a whole... the plot seemed a bit lightweight for some reason.

ending was a bit shit too... 'gritty' dramas almost always seem to fall into the same trap imo.
