It's interesting that DMS gets more highly rated on here, as RL people I've recommended both films too have said that DMS is just a standard revenge-thriller, but have loved TIE.

DMS is so much more than that. Normally revenge flicks are full of cookie cutter hollywood kids you don't give a fuck about getting offed. Whereas in DMS, they're pretty much all people we've met. Just idiot small town lowlifes.

Yeah, I agree personally. They weren't like typical baddies, they were like the guys that we've all sat and chatted bollocks with in side rooms in squat parties at some point or another, yet they were doing all this nasty stuff to his brother.

That made is more powerful than as you say if they'd just had standard identivillains.

Just wonderful, one of the best British movies ever made. The way it's shot alone - that scene with Hoskins ballroom dancing in the dusty light... Amazing stuff.

Yeah I watched it quite recently and thought it was very good too.

My only qualm with Meadows though is that all 4 of these films have a very similar core theme: the guy exploding with rage. I mean there's no problem with that but it would be good to see what else he can do.

Is Somerstown seen as a 'proper' new film of his or just a between-films experiment?

I think it's something he's obviously working through for himself, cos of his past. (the SBS about him was great). Kids lacking role models, male potential for violence...

I dont know what i was expecting from the film, but it wasn't Eli Dingle! The music could have been better too, considering the amount of good punk and oi stuff around at the time. The only good song i can remember is the UK Subs 'Warhead'.

On the whole a bit piss poor.

eli dingle was smashing - best thing in the film imo. he lives near a mate of mine, and is apparently just like that in real life.

This is what elevates him to an artist, I think, like Truffaut.

I can't think of a single other contemporary British filmmaker on that level. There ought to be lots, some making great films others shit ones. Where are they? Am I just missing them?

i'm still convinced there's a poster on here who is the same person - from what i remember he's the spit of him

what film wouldn't be improved by the inclusion of an oi soundtrack, regardless whether it'd have any relevance to the story?

Whoah buster whoah! That's far too big a claim far too early!

Calm down dear. If all i can remember is Eli Dingle (agreed HE was good) and Warhead then how bad must it have been?

The point is, it's a film about skins. There was a lot of new romantic music about at the time as well, and there's none of that in it.

Guess why?

Cos the film ISN'T ABOUT NEW ROMANTICS.

Fuck me, you're as thick as trev
