was only about 3 years at most weren't it?
yeh, if that. So not that weird at all.

did he get the date though?
I think I'd compare Meadows more to Ken Loach than Mike Leigh. Leigh's dialogue (the excellent Topsy Turvy excepted) is normally highly stylised.and it works SO much better in Meadows' films than in Leigh's, IMO
this is where i don't agree with you and what really jars me most about the movie. the way that the character of woody had been set up meant that his disappearance without a by-your-leave simply didn't rung true and nags me throughout the second half of the film.but the way Woody and his missus vanish from view halfway through is crucial, and shows courageous film-making. To have two such charismatic lovable characters just disappear serves the plot and takes balls
if he knows combo for what he is, why does he leave a vulnerable young boy who he's befriended and taken under his wing with him?but combo shows up, woody knows him for what he is and clears off and wants nothing to do with him. Stark choices are made.
rings totlly true to me
Because he's not a hero.if he knows combo for what he is, why does he leave a vulnerable young boy who he's befriended and taken under his wing with him?
But they still listened to ska!!idiot! yeah not bad seen it about 5 timesBecause he's not a hero.
but its not about meeting combo head on at all, its about protecting shaun.quite. he's actually quite a weak character in that sense, when combo shows up woody is visibly cowed and careful. He doesn't meet him head on
It was alright, but didn't blow me away like Dead Man's Shoes did.
i agree, but he didnt really do a good job at that either. his attitude was steer clear and hope others will follow. school of hard knocks/let others learn from their mistakes perhaps? or just plain cowardly?but its not about meeting combo head on at all, its about protecting shaun.
What was the age difference between smell and shaun?
I know of girls at my school that went out with boys 2 or 3 years younger than them....
Beware of the true story in fiction.Hasn't Meadows himself said that that whole relationship was based on something that actually happened to him when he was Shaun's age?

quite. he's actually quite a weak character in that sense, when combo shows up woody is visibly cowed and careful. He doesn't meet him head on
So not crap. I think it's an amazing film.
and also trying to connect it with the rise of the BNP today.

I thought it was anything but contrived. Those kids seemed like real mates who really hung out. It was like eavesdropping, it was so natural and uncontrived.
why? he wasn't THAT young, and she was only a couple of years older. And I knew girls at school who just snogged people for the hell of it..
Ye the storyline was pretty shit
Nothing was really followed up or even inter-connecting

Agreed. Dead Man's Shoes was so utterly brilliant, it will always be a hard act to follow for Meadowes. This is England is a great film, especially if you're interested in 70s/80's popular culture, music, and the fight against racism. And who isn't!?
