This Charming Man - "the best pop single ever"

this charming man?....

good song yeah, not even close to the BEST...

well, i suppose its what you define pop as...to me itd be something like....like a virgin or something by wham! lol

The late great Tony Wilson once had a go at me when I was working in Waterstones cos he couldn't find find morley's latest book. Wasn`t too happy when I poinetd out that he was looking in crime fiction and should try a different section.;)

As for this Charming Man? Would've sounded better if it'd been one of the ones coverd by the Ukrainians. They made Bigmouth sound great.

in retrospect....freedom by george michael is my favourite pop song ever , cause it makes me feel more poppy than any other song :p :D...which makes me reallly uncool to music snobs...

but do i give a fuck?

nah. :D

And the greatest single ever doesn't exist
OTM. In non-measurable terms, as art such a music is, you can't define "best" or "greatest". We can all have a jolly good shout about our own opinions though. :)

Edited to add; Off the top of my head, Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode".

Not the smiths best single - I would go for 'what difference does it make?'.

Not the greatest pop song - that would be 'You really got me' by the Kinks as any fool know.

This Charming Man, as a single, would certainly be my stand out single from the Smiths, although closely followed by either of the 2 singles either side of it (HIG & WDDIM?).

However, any ful no that the greatest pop single ever made was Teenage Kicks by the Undertones.

See, it's all in the opening chords, the instant recognition, the sing-a-long-a-quality, as well as the sexual confusion inherent in both that properly speaks to the true audience of pop singles, namely pubescent angst-ridden spotty teenagers.

i think morley lives near me. see him about all the time. dunno i that's a good or a bad thing. suppose it'd be good if he invited me back for a drink one day and by chance had a heart attack so i could rob lots of his records and stuff.

Did you know Jonny Marr was in a band with Curly from Corrie before joining The Smiths?

he was also played guitar on Quando Quango's "Atom Rock" which is a million times better than any of the old tosh The Smiths did

In the 1990s morley moved in next door to what was my family's flat in
South Hampstead. You know, down from Finchley Road Waitrose.
Very nice spot.
I don't know if he's still there.

Of that ilk, of that era, and of that artist:

Every day is Like Sunday.

Perfect tune. (I like miserable music :) )

Best single ever? This Charming Man is great, but for me it will be a toss up between Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division and God Save The Queen by Sex Pistols. It is still as incendary today as it ever was.
