Third Test, Trent Bridge

England seem to have the wood on Sri Lankan openers atm. Not an innings goes by but one gets out before the team has got to 10.

I don't understand how Jayawardene managed to get caught behind off a wide half-volley; no way should he have played that one.

Egad, we'll have to bat like champions to chase this down, whatever they manage to leave us. To be honest I think the Ceylonese deserve a squared series, I said on the 1st Test thread that this would be a tough one; the Lankans' fight hard and Murali is a genius. Something resembling our Ashes winning side would be nice come Pakistan, or failing that come Brisbane...

I think England still have a fair chance. They're actually better at chasing big targets than small ones.

As I write with Sri Lanka 322 runs ahead you can get 4/9 on them winning with Coral. Surely this is wrong on the website?

If it's not it's the best value bet I've ever seen. about 1/7 would be be nearer the mark.

Sri are very big favourites. I doubt that 325 has been done in the fourth innings very often.

According to Sky, England have only ever done it once (334 in the 1920s).

Trescothick has just been saved by an outrageous piece of luck; the ball hit the wicket and the bails didn't fall off.

I don't know if that is luck. The ball simply wasn't good enough to knock the bails off. Of course, it is a kind of luck, but not the same kind of luck when you give away an easy catch that gets dropped.

Pfeiffer, five-for.

This is one of the reasons why cricket's the best game ever. It's got a sense of humour.

And it fines people for getting a bit cross, because it's ungentlemanly.

Monty to hit a double hundred in a last wicket partnership with hoggard? anyone? - no I thought not
