Thinking about getting a Palm Centro!

I still love the thing, thankfully had very little problems with it, having great fun trialing tons of different software and always find myself tinkering with it! A mate from work is so impressed he's seriously considering getting one. Another work mate looks like they're considering it too. Heh.

Although it's big draw back is starting to annoy, the battery. It's crap. I can barely get through a day on one charge, I really don't see why I should have to buy a second battery but reckon I'll have to at some point...can't Palm make a more powerful one we could buy to replace the default one (and not one of those ugly inducing big ones that have the bigger backs!)??!

Are you using Power Hero? That really helps.

Oh yeah forgot about that...I love the software customisation of the Centro but cant help feel it's a bit crap that we have to pay for software to make up for it's short comings.

am having trouble getting picture messaging working with the centro on tmobile...can anyone enlighten me? I asked tmobile and predictably they have never heard of the Centro and emailed me the generic MMS settings which do not seem to fit into the same categories as the Centro is requesting...apparently someone sending me a picture from an enabled centro might do the trick (sounds like voodoo but worth a go)

Oh, hang on: let me take a look at my own phone's settings... tell you what, I'll PM them to you.

THANKYOU!!!

info for anyone else reading this....

expansys wanted me to tick the wap box and neither they nor tmobile noticed that by default they had put a COLON before 9201 in the MMS

My download speed was incredible while in Rome, I don't quite know why but it was near 3G speeds and it rocked! C'mon make the Centro 2 3G!

There's a slightly updated version of Opera out so I'm going to give it another go following these instructions:

1. Download and install Opera Mini 4.1 (link says 4, but it's really 4.1) for your Palm OS device from http://www.operamini.com/download/wap/palm/. Note: Don't run the application on the handheld yet, unless you want to be dashed like me!

2. Download "IBM WebSphere Micro Environment Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Palm OS" from http://mytreo.net/downloads/ibm-websphere-everyplace-java-virtual-machine,1313.html (have to register (it's free) on this site in order to download) and install the following few files to your handheld from within this ZIP file:

The required files are in the sub-folder "WEME571JVM\ARM4T". The required files in that folder are "J9JavaVMMidp20.prc" (about 1654KB) and "JavaVMCheck_?.prc" where the ? is a language code appropriate for your Palm. For non-English languages you'll also need a "J9JavaVMMidp20_?.prc". For me, the files were:

J9JavaVMMidp20.prc
JavaVMCheck_enUS.prc

4. If you haven't already, HotSync to install both the Opera Browser and the Java Support files to your device.

5. Set the appropriate Java Preferences on your handheld:

a. Open the "Prefs" application and scroll to the bottom and open "IBM Java VM".

b. In the IBM Java Preferences screen, set to the following:

My Settings on a Treo 680 (USA):
* Use Double Buffering = YES
* Use high resolution coordinates = YES
* Set Memory Maximum = 4 MB (some say 1MB is enough or even better)
* Set the Maximum Thread Stack size = 32KB

6. Launch the "Opera" program icon on your handheld and hopefully it will open without a hitch. Here is the whole story in case you need more insight: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=168423.

*edit. It works alright but I'm still a bit underwhelmed.

I really can't be arsed tbh. Opera 4 was great on my N73 but that was mainly because it helped overcome the lack of navigation etc, with the Centro the Blazer browser does the job well enough for me I've found...

I could never be bothered with Opera on the Palm either. Blazer is, well, a bit crap, but not so crap that it's worth going through all the rubbish you have to go through to get Opera working IMO; plus Opera just isn't well integrated into the environment.

Just downloaded Life Balance for a trial; not sure I quite see the point of it yet given all the other task listing, time management software there is and at $40 it's quite pricey.

It's a pretty complex bit of software, but if you get your head around it, it's apparently really, really good - some people swear by it. I'm still trying to find the time to give it a proper go.

Meanwhile, the Centro has just clocked up its 2 millionth sale and was the 6th most popular handset for data in the US (Razr v3 was first, iPhone 12th).

Stats galore: http://www.admob.com/marketing/pdf/mobile_metrics_jun_08.pdf (PDF)

Yeah me either I'm finding, also not sure I need quite that level of software assistance either!

Note Studio is well worth getting though - it's a superb note taking app. Are you using Plucker? Being able to highlight parts of a web page (or entire pages/sites) and transfer it over to my Palm with optimised graphics/text via a hotsync is brilliant!

The Centro's just made the 'The 20 Best Products Under $100 ' list in PC Mag too.

Note Studio? Nope, I'm trialing Bonzai, and using PSnotes (I think that's what it's called)...Plucker sounds cool but again not sure I have a need for it, might trial it though just to check it out.

Here's some handy shortcuts:

Quickly access Recently Accessed Applications: Press and hold the Applications button and a list of the last 8 most recently used applications will appear. If you continue holding the Apps button down, the highlighted (previous) app will open.

Create New Memo or ToDo on the fly: When in the build in "Memo" or "Tasks" applications, if you just start typing anything on your keyboard, a "New" Memo or ToDo will automatically be launched.

Toggle Keyboard KeyGuard: Hit the Option button (lower left "dot" button) + Power (Red) button.

Turn off Keyboard backlight and dim the screen all at once: Option button + right Menu button.

Alternative "Enter" button: If your on the Home Apps screen, if you hit the spacebar, whatever app is highlighted will launch. The functionality of the Spacebar varies a bit from app to app.

Perform a "Tab" function (same as the "Tab" key on your computer): When in a text field, hit Shift + Spacebar.

Global find: Hit Option + Shift, to search through all applications for specific words, especially in Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memo.

Global Shortcuts (This functions on my Verizon Centro, but doesn't on my Treo 680): From the "Favorites" screen within the Phone Application, hit the Menu button to create a new Favorite and assign it a "Quick Key". Then when in any screen or application, if you hold down the apps assigned Favorite Quick Key, the corresponding app will launch. This is very cool, because you can create "Favorites" for a phone numbers or a web sites or any application, and use this method to quickly launch it. Note: The only time I've found that the Favorite Quick Key won't launch Globally is if you are in a text screen at the time.

Quickly access Symbols: When in a text screen, just hit the Alt key and the symbol list will pop up. To quickly select your symbol choice, hit the Spacebar.

Additional Alt Key function, such as Smiley Faces: When in a text screen, type in a symbol, such as a Colon, then hit Alt. For example, if you hit Option key + K (for a colon), then hit the Alt key, you will see some Smiley Face choices pop up :-)

Populate a Contact name and phone number into a New Appointment: When in the Calendar, on the "One Day" screen, tab in one of the lines on the screen to create an appointment, then hit the Menu key + the letter "L". This will launch the Contact Lookup screen, from there you choose the Contact and tab the "Add" button. Note: The given contact must contain a phone number, or that contact will not be listed on the Lookup screen.

Quick Access to the Alert Screen: When you miss an alert or snooze an alarm, a little Bell icon will blink in the upper left corner. Press and hold the center button of the 5-way navigation and the alerts dialog window opens.

Nine (9) built-in Advanced Calculators: Open the Calculator application and then push the right side of the 5-way navigator to toggle through the 9 calculators (Trig, Finance, Logic, Statistics, Weight/Temperature, Length, Area, Volume, Math). If you exit the program on one of these 9 calculators, the same one will launch when you return to the calculator application. Press the left side of the 5-way navigator to return to the normal calculator. These calcs can be accessed via Menu/Options as well.

Last number redial: While in the main phone screen, hold down the Green Send button and the last number you called will redial.

Quickly call the person you are texting: When you are texting someone, if you want to quickly call them, hit the Green Send button.

For a Contact Favorite, quickly show all their phone numbers (home, work, cell, etc.):Add a Contact as a Favorite, then on the Favorite sceen, with that Contact Favorite highlighted, hit the Spacebar, and you will see the additional phone numbers pop up for that contact.

Adjust the screen brightness on the fly: From any screen, hit Option + P.

URL Address Field jump: While in the Blazer Browser, hit the Spacebar and it will take you back up to the URL Address field.

To Refresh Pages in Blazer: Hit Option + R.

Load a Fresh copy of a Web Page: To cause a fresh copy of Web pages to appear every time you initially access them, do the following: Note: This configuration may slow down Web Page access a bit...In the Blazer Browser, go to Options/Preferences, then go to the Advanced tab on the top. Check the box "Clear cache on exit". This should cause Blazer to get a fresh copy each time a page is initially accessed. Performance may go down a bit because the function of caching is to speed up browsing by not having to reload images and info that was previously accessed

my treo centro has gone insane - any ideas?

it won't respond to any of the published soft and hard resets...removing battery and replacing..removing batt and replacing whilst holding up key or power key

It is just sitting there with a black screen and a little red light on top left

(this would be less painful if I it wasn't my only means of getting online, and my only phone in new flat, and unbacked up for a couple of weeks due to missing synch issues and the general hell of moving house)

I'm sitting in coffee shop..may be spending a while here...

Eeek! That sounds grim. Have you tried resetting with the power supply connected as well as battery only? Check that you haven't turned off the screen too.

its the treo centro dark grey black model from expansys..an early one..

are there different models of centro..apart from colour?

There were a few cases of the early batches suffering the same problem as you.

(gulp: I got the even earlier batch!)

Yeah there's one or two posts/threads about that on the Treocentral forums. Might mean buying a new Centro Piers I'm afraid (unless Palm have good after sales service in terms of warranty?)...

Centro 2 rumours

Hmmmmm not sure I like the look of this (whether fake or not) tbh:

palm_centro2.jpg

At Palm Addicts they've somehow got hold of a leaked advert that looks like it's for Palm's update to the Centro, the Centro2 smartphone. Take a peek—it's pretty convincing. There's of course no way to know whether this is real or a piece of photoshop fakery and it's difficult to glean much info on the device from the photos, though the advert is pushing the phone's PDA organizer aspects.

The big difference is the missing keyboard, but whether that implies a touchscreen or some sort of slide-out pad is unclear. It also seems to have media controls at the top, and Palm Addicts thinks it's running Windows Mobile. Watch this space, Palm fans

:hmm:
