Thinking about getting a Palm Centro!

Right, it's working fine by the look of it, had a quick look around, tried the web on it (loads surprising fast) one thing though, how do you get the bloody sim out!? Need to put it in my usual phone till I get home (has all my contacts etc) and it wont come out!

e2a: Emergency over, got a work mate with very long nails to help me out!

Heh it's a cool little phone, so tiny! Is there anyway of getting msn messenger for free? Don't fancy paying $30 for it, also how do you get java for it (just tried to run Opera Mini)?

I've not tried any but these are freeware: http://www.freeware-palm.com/tag-msn.html
http://www.freeware-palm.com/download-gizmo-v1-0-4-for-treo.html

You should be able to find Java online if you have a rummage. One thing - Palm have the best online communities of the lot IMO - really supportive - so maybe ask on some of the popular forums?

The web is reasonably quick on the Palm, but the browser is a bit on the duff side (but it suits me, to be honest - after all Google Maps works just fine.)

There's the official msn messenger site I found, it's ok but nowhere near as fast as chat needs to be. Will check out the others.

Regarding the browser/web I must say I'm quite impressed by the speeds I've been getting, it's no 3G but it's quite nippy! The browser is very basic but that aint too much of a bother because mobile browsing is very basic anyway. I only used Opera on my N73 because the default browser wasn't faster enough and Opera has some nice little functions but the main one, the start page thing, Blazer does better anyway (like the rollerdeck style).

Started using the phone regularly now, really enjoying it, I'm still a bit cumbersome with the keyboard but getting better. Navigating around the applications/phone is swift, with only very occasional lag and it's only hung once or twice will surfing. :)

Haven't quite sorted my email on it yet though; thought I'd set up Gmail (I can send emails no probs) but it doesn't seem to want to retrieve new ones. Not sure what's up with that...roll on the 4gig card's arrival so I can start stuffing apps onto it! :D

If the page seems to get 'stuck' when downloading, try tapping on the screen or hitting the spacebar - that sometimes frees it up.

Gmail should work fine, so you'll have to fiddle about in the prefs.

Another must have is Butler which gives the option to set launch hotkeys from any key, set LED indicators for missed calls/new SMS (fuck knows why Palm took that off), a groovy keyguard, and security which lets you remotely trash the phone's content via SMS if it gets nicked.

One thing: Palm apps are comparatively tiny so you can stuff shedloads in the phone's memory and have space a plenty left (I'm still running at 64% free).

I do believe that gmail will not work with the built in mail app. I tried for ages and then I think I read it somewhere. If there's an idiot-proof guide to getting it working, let me know if you find it KE!

@ Ed

Funny enough I was literally just reading about Butler on a Palm blog somewhere, does look useful...cheers for the tip regarding the hanging. It's no real annoyance as yet and still a big improvement on the N73's surfing so it's cool.

Oh yeah was just looking at Agendus, what's the difference between the three versions (standard, prof and premier) any reason to get anything other than the standard?

@ Crispy

Will do. Going to get a mate to have a look at it over the weekend.

I'm using it OK, but I'm using the superb Chatteremail. It should work fine with the Centro though and probably the 680 too.
Just a quick note to let you know that we have posted an update to VersaMail for Palm Centro users that includes improved Gmail compatibility. Check it out and let us know what you think.
Product update includes:
  • Enhancements to Gmail IMAP compatibility and an updated setup wizard with the new Gmail settings
  • Improvements to help eliminate the silent failure of email when using Microsoft's Direct Push Technology via Exchange ActiveSync in VersaMail. Some users have reported that their email stops arriving, but they are not notified to press "Sync" to re-enable Direct Push Technology. This update helps eliminate the occurrence of this scenario.
If you do not use Microsoft EAS or Gmail IMAP for email, you do not need to download this new version of VersaMail. Visit the support page for details.

The Premier comes with its own email client (I think) but I'm not sure what the other differences are. The Agendus desktop app is great and well worth the outlay.

No joy for other treo models though :(
Not going to spend money on an email app - the phone really should handle it out of the box. I use the web interface to get at my gmail for now.

Ah cheers. Yep seriously considering getting Agendus...common sense and memory just kicked in. Been wading through all your articles in the tech section of u75 about Palm and software etc. Exceptionally useful.

It should but tbh I'd prefer to have all my various email accounts in one place rather than having to switch between apps to check them so don't mind paying.

Oh, and if you;re after some games, the new GTS Racing is a cracker:

And Platypus is a great shoot 'em up - well slick!

They looks pretty neat although I have a DS (and a R4 with 30 odd games on a 2gig micro sd with over 150 more on my lappy!)...:o

Chatteremail offers the exceptionally useful facility of offering all your new emails from multiple accounts in one colour-coded 'summary' view.

I'm not sure if any other mobile email clients do this but it's ruddy handy if you're always getting tons of email from a host of accounts when you're on the move.

Looks like the Centro has proved to be a massive hit for Palm - it's now on track to hit 2 million sales by the end of this quarter and it's already helped the company nearly double its share of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2008.

It's about to be released on Verizon in the States too, which should boost sales even further.

It would do very well over here if they actually marketed it properly. I see Blackberry Pearl ads all over the place but have never seen the Centro in a shop front or at the bottom page of the Metro...with a contact sub it could be free or very cheap too...bit of a shame really.

Maybe it's worth shelling out a few quid and getting the far superior Chattermail if it's not working out.

That's what I'm thinking tbh...just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something before parting with my dosh.

Well, others say that they've got it to work just fine with the Versamail Centro upgrade, but seeing as Chatterermail is probably one of the best mobile email apps on any platform, it's pretty much worth spending a few quid on, IMO.

Still no joy with Gmail/Versamail. Haven't had a chance to catch up with a mate who's a wizz at these kinda things. In the mean time I'm trying out a few things, just tried that iphone like app that's just come out, kinda fun but not sure I want to pay for it. Trialing Butler now...

It's really worth shelling out a few quid for Chatteremail. It's a fantastic email client and Gmail works perfectly.

Yeah I just downloaded the trial of it, had my Gmail up and running in under 60 seconds from install! Going to buy it come pay day.

It's a great prog: once you get used to the summary view, nothing else will do!

It works in the background too, so you can download scheduled mail checks while listening to music and doing other stuff on your phone- and it did it a lot quicker than my last 'multi tasking' WM phone.

Cool. You know I've been browsing the games, and got to thinking someone should really release a version of Civilisation for it, I reckon it'd do well.
