Things you really need and things you really don't need for a baby. . .

as far as it "ties/holds" a baby into the seat and the seat into the car it will be fairly safe. personally i would also take a baby for a short while in a car not strapped in if he say was hungry etc....but obviously that is just what i would do and is not what would be considered safe.

Sorry but

If you want to drive around without a seatbelt that's entirely up to you but not to ensure your baby is strapped in is just irresponsible imo.

Personally I'm quite happy about increased levels of car safety, especially for the small and fragile among us.

Exactly. We used to be allowed to have house full of asbestos but that doesn't mean it's safe or healthy.

BTW, the law on child car seats is here. It is absolutely illegal to travel with a child under 3 in a car without a car seat, unless it's a licensed mini-cab. The rules about kids over-3 are actually surprisingly relaxed.

That site also says that:

The number of children under 12 injured in car accidents in Great Britain fell by more than 1,000 in the first full year since the introduction of the new car seat law.

so why would a licensed mini cab would make a difference. they could still get involved in a car crash. so could a bus where children are not strapped in.

but of course i have to correct myself i would also strongly advise a car seat and as a matter of fact we had one too to pick baby up from hospital. but since then i took one licensed mini cab and frankly the bloke didn't even give me the time to attach the seat properly.

i do however disagree that a family perhaps of low income without a car should present a car seat when they hardly make use of a car.

also i quite happily use any car seat for my baby and will not each time enquire if it has been involved in an accident. cause i am sure there are plenty of accidents that wouldn't severly damage the seat.

i think i am more worried to go on a public london bus without anything to strap a baby in than using a second hand car seat!!!

also that would proove that its unnecessary for professionals to check people are leaving with a car seat as the law allows licensed mini cabs to take babies without one.. :o

or black cabs....i never saw an adult or baby being seat belted in one and they can be involved in accidents.

The site says that the law about minicabs is for practical reasons, but it's still not really safe. It wouldn't surprise me if child carseats are required in minicabs in a few years' time - it wouldn't be that hard to keep one at the cab office, after all.

Yeah, I agree that a family that's not going to use a car shouldn't be forced to get a car seat, but there aren't many people with babies who are never going to use a car. I got mine for free, in any case.

I'm rarely speechless, but a phone conversation I had with Toys R Us rendered me utterly flabbergasted this afternoon.

Me: Hello, I ordered a pushchair and I'm waiting to see whether it's come in yet.
Them: I don't think you did. We don't order things in.
Me: Uh, OK. Can I speak to someone in Babies R Us, please?

(The fact that I had parted with £270 on the understanding that the goods would be available to me within 10 days suggested that they had indeed ordered it. Hopefully. I didn't mention this.

Babies R Us: Yes?
Me: Hello, I'm phoning to find out whether my buggy has come into stock yet. (I give description of buggy and my name).
Them: *Sigh* I've tried calling you. We've no way of knowing when it's coming in.
Me: Oh, only I ordered it on the 25th Oct and was told it would be available in 10 days.
Her: WILL YOU LET ME FINISH??!!
Me. Er, yeah.
Her. *Sigh* (speaks v-e-r-y slowly) I called you to let you know that we don't know when it'll be in stock. Now, I've gone out of my way to order you one from another store. I will PHONE you when it comes in.
Me: OK, er, thank you. Goodbye.

I checked my mobile and my land line for missed calls, and do you know what? She hadn't tried to call me at all.

I'm a bit worried now.

Do they have financial difficulties or are they just incompetent? And rude? Hmmm... :hmm:

Missed calls don't necessarily show if the line was engaged when they tried calling.

1571/Callminder don't always save messages if you don't hang on to listen to the recorded message. Many people don't realise this and hang up before it plays back.

Just a couple of reasons why they may actually not be lying to you

I didn't know that, but I can assure you she was lying. The last person to call my landline was my mother in law the previous night (I did 1471 immediately after the conversation) and there were no logged calls to my mobile at all.

Anyway, she was probably having a shit day. Or maybe she'd confused me with someone else, which did cross my mind. Either way, I'm £270 down, 38 weeks pregnant and got sent to the naughty step, which for some reason I'm finding quite amusing.:D

you can't assure anyone she was lying because there are many other reasons a call may not be logged - misdialled, technical fuck up etc. Or as you say, she was confused and thought you were someone else.

I've lost count of the times I've been accused of lying by customers when I'm not.

Even if she did try to phone she still didn't need to be so arsey. Go in there and punch her in the face poot. You'll get away with it, just blame your hormones. ;)

Has anyone mentioned the good old bouncy chair yet?

Not one of these motorised jobbies but the metal wire ones.

They're an absolute saviour, you can lie half asleep with your toe under the foot of it and bouce it while they cry/squeal/sleep. They only last till they're about 10/11 months though, it depends on the weight of your child mine were quite hefty.

I hear rants like that at me every day, doesn't make it right.

Hold on! She was ranting at me. That's why I'm finding it so funny! I'm the least aggressive person I know- I literally sat back and let it all wash over me. I was completely confused about why I was being ranted at - that was the point I was trying to make. I never accused her of lying, or of anything else for that matter.

And yay for bouncy chairs! And doorway bouncers when they get a bit bigger (only problem with bouncing in a doorway is that Dad perpetually assumed our child was playing in goal).
