The canal there was frozen solid. It was unusually cold that year in fairness, down to -20 C iirc.
I'm a bit of a wuss about the cold anyway, but I was genuinely concerned about the liquid in my eyeballs freezing :o I'd just moved there and thought I'd made a terrible, terrible mistake :D

I have to say, this morning I started to go off the idea. At least for now - I think I need more sun in February. Berlin seems like it would be a super cool place in the spring, or summer. But sheisse... that up there seems way too cold for sightseeing.
Maybe April or so, would be better.

The best time is definitely in summer, July and August, loads going on, parks full of Berliners doing their thing.

British mentality eh! We sing White Christmas with a passion and then poo poo the idea of going anywhere cold on hols unless it involves sking.

This thread is cool. I'm going to Berlin at some point, as a weekend trip from Poland. It's a 9 hour train journey from where I'm living but I think it will be worth it. I want to go to one of the spas!

There's a really good restaurant at the corner of Revalerstr and Simon-Dachstr. I'm fucked if I can remember what it's called but it's there. It's the only place where the pizza got the thumbs up from my fussy Italian girlfriend. Like most eaty places around there it's good value. The last time I was in, the meal (starter, main, 1 drink each), cost €32 between us. There's loads of good places but that's the one I tend to go back to.

* turns on middle class mode*

the intercontinental at Zoo has the most amazing Spa set up = you could spend a week in there- serioulsy - hot pools/ 5 time differnt shower types - JUngle rain anyone ? - a handful of steam rooms , an ice plunge pool ....all included in the room price

best news ?

weeekends are quite for business types - cheap rates - the club rooms a re leather chic, with their own floor- accesable by key card only - own dining and a FREE BAR in the evenings. the churlish masses fighting in the buffet downstairs dont have a fuckin clue about the dripping luxuxry above them

is also within staggering distance of Charlies bar - now called MIllionaires - if your want serious rather than faux 70's cheese - then this is a fantastic place - they even have a kenny G sax player stylee fellow who parps along to the favorite easy listenng songs, dressed in a polyester white suit! A Mind blowing genuine anachronism of a cocktail bar that seems to open til 5AM

fuckin A!

I'm going in December too

Very easy to get around, even at night. Lots of night buses, some trams run all night and the s-bahn runs really late. Everything runs 24 hours at the weekend too - check out http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/Bvg/Start

Taxis aren't expensive either.

I'm going on the 30th and staying for 10 days or so, though New Year there is a bit mental

There's lots of bars/restaurants on Oranienburgerstrasse near Tacheles. Try the area round Eberswalder Strasse u-bahn too, I really like Dr Pong (it's a ping pong bar) and there's a nice Thai restaurant called Golden Buddha I think on Gleimstrasse. Also Kreuzberg - Tante Horst on Oranienstrasse, theres a friendly, decent Irish pub on Erkelenzdamm that used to be called The Old Emerald Isle but is now called something else, lots of lovely places on Graefestrasse too (especially Room 77 for nachos and a few good places for brunch - Berlin loves brunching). There's a market round the corner from Graefestrasse on Maybachufer, and also Ankerklause on the canal.

Try Berghain if you like techno and/or gays, and Tresor.

One of the best things about Berlin is it has actual seasons. It snow like fuck in winter. It's roasting hot in summer. And the air is fresh they write songs about the Berliner Luft.

Best all round climate in the world, IMO.
