Things to do and see in Berlin?

Thora said:
Ooh, I used to live very near there

If you're staying in Alexanderplatz you should go to the Weekend Club - it's on the 12th floor of a tower block and you get some pretty lush night time views of east Berlin. I'd go inside the dome at the Reichstag if I were you too - it's not socialist architecture but I still think it's pretty cool.

If you're in Berlin on a Friday/Saturday night you really should go to Berghain. Dr Pong is like being in a youth club, but in a good way, and is walking distance from the Weinerei at Zionkirche - I've never paid more than 5 euros for drinking my body weight in wine there :D

I'm staying in Mitte - not sure how close that is to Alexanderplatz? The Weekend Club and it's night time views of Berlin sound great! Not going to be there on a Saturday unfortunately - will be there Tuesday 19th Feb - Friday 22nd Feb.

Will definitely go to the Weinerei at Zionkirche! :D

I'm heading to Berlin in a couple of weeks. Apparently my mate that lives there is dragging us to a theme bar dedicated to Rob Halford of Judas Priest fame. Not sure what I'm letting myself in for...

Sounds intriguing! Keep us updated. Pictures would be good too ;)

This is an absolute must do also in my book: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernsehturm

Cool as... and you get a good idea about the layout of the city and the old East/West divide. Time it right to watch the sunset over typically crap potato and sausage soup with soggy cabbage type German mush. Worth it for the architecture, decor and old skool, cold war spy atmosphere.

Thanks for this SE! Do you have to book or can you just turn up?

Don't have to book AFAIK. Turn up at English eating time and it will be relatively empty. The restaurant rotates 360° every 30 minutes. I've spent many hours there. Once arranged to meet a girlfriend there - me reading a newspaper, her wearing a flower in lapel. We did Two hours acting out a covert cold war spy/love liaison :D Great fun.

Food is relatively affordable mainstream stuff.

Excellent - can't wait to go. I do love a revolving building! :) :) :)

Just spoken to someone who used to work in government town planning in Berlin and she recommends Marzahn as an area to see socialist architecture. Not been myself, but I'm sure I will some day.

e2a; Oh. I have been! Photograph on this thread is very close. Just the other side of the railway.

Ooh, thanks for that. Above and beyond - much appreciated! :)

I was there from 4am til 6pm Sunday when my mate got kicked out.

Music was fairly shite though, that's my criticism of the places I've been in Berlin. Unless you like minimal techno.

That's true - your choices are pretty much techno or indie disco. Although I did see a couple of Germans doing Johnny Cash covers at an Irish pub the other day

Every fucker's going to Berlin in February! My flatmate + her boyfriend, my ex + his mates. And now all of you.
I plan to go in Feb too. Though it was pointed out to me today that it will be completely freezing in Feb - not great for sightseeing. But, my plan is to go there from 13th or 14th Feb, for a few days or so.
Yay for this thread!

I don't care if it's cold - that's what bars are for! :) :) :)

I went in January last year and it was fine. I'm in Germany again now... and its fine.. Its cold, but still not as fucking miserable as London. :p

Yeah I've been to Germany this year too, and yes it was cold, but I agree with your sentiments. Just for sightseeing in Berlin - we thought maybe Feb would be too cold & the summer might be better. But I don't care - I just want to go to Berlin! And would rather sooner than later.
Where are you now?
I'm going again next weekend actually :) - not Berlin though, somewhere much less exciting. (But nice :) - and a few weeks ago the sky was beautiful blue - I got another suntan on my face!)

This was the sky that gave me the suntan:

(In January! But that wasn't Berlin, so I should probably exit the thread now :( But.... we never get sky like that in England! Ever!)

I stayed with friends in Berlin last February and it was fucking freezing, especially at night. Still, didn't really matter as we spent most of our time in bars and restaurants around Kreuzberg. :)

It is pretty cold in February - this year hasn't been so bad so far and last year was quite mild, but the winter before was outrageously cold imo! As long as it's bright and crisp (like tastebud's pic) it's not so bad - you just can't do much in the way of aimless wandering though.
