Things that won't turn off, but only go into 'standby'

AS far as I can tell, DAB radios loose all thier stations when you unplug them. When you switch them back on, they tale a couple of minutes to find them all again.

That's just crap design. It would be very easy to use EEPROM or battery backed RAM.

From the Guardian

Reviewing a new wind-up DAB/FM radio:

a (vigorous) 60-second wind will give you an hour of FM radio, or three minutes of digital. That, it seems, is how much more electricity DAB consumes. With other radios, you just flick a switch: completely divorced from the extra power being used. The Devo connects you to the true cost - and time is paid for not by power stations, but by your pecs.

i couldn't agree more. my hifi system can't be turned off as it will switch itself instantly back on and terrorise with a flashy lcd dispay saying all sorts of things. i always need to unpluck it.

my sony vaio laptop which i bought second hand but is not very old. doesn't go on stand-by function (or it is not activated as i can see it but it doesn't work) so i always have to leave it on or switch it completely off. btw can anyone recommend anything about this.

currently i can't find my alarm clock. so i am using my mobile phone but that means i need to keep it switched on all night which also annoys me.

 fazit: all of this is really annoying!

Um... Aren't there better things (like the damage caused by air travel) to get so worked up about...? If you want to switch things off then do so. How hard is unplugging something or using a switched power supply...?

sure of course unplugging is the key etc. but how hard can it be to develop a proper working turn-off button on an expensive electrical product as well?

its only a partial solution, but i've found this six plug extension - one-click, which switches off all power to five of the sockets when you switch the sixth to standby, and vice versa when you switch the sixth back on. got it from quietpc

Mine doesn't. It's got one of those bad power supplies that heats up like a furnace and wastes loads of energy if you leave it on, so it's regularly off at the plug for long periods - it remembers all the stations and comes back on the one you last listened to. My FM stereo, on the other hand, forgets it all - and it's much more of a pain to tune 102.6, 105.2 etc back in than just press an "autotune" button as seen on DAB sets.
