all the characters were distant from other people in some way and they (almost) all find some way of making connection with other people during the film. It's not earth shatteringly opaque or anything - it's no bela tarr movie, it's hollywood! The point is hammered home very heavily at the end (as alex b has pointed out) by the communal experience of the freak frog storm and also by the singing of the aimee mann song.
