Thieving Housemates - What To Do?

You could develop a story that the cookies were not meant for human consumption but to kill some rats you've spotted out back. Cue trip to casaulty and having her stomach pumped whilst tripping her face off and shitting herself in both respects.

I'm evil.

Second I'm going to call the landlord myself and have a chat - he'll find it a lot harder to avoid taking me seriously.

Don't 'have a chat. Be sure that your reasonable requests are put assertively in writing and then backed up with a phone call. Issue an time ultimatum for the matter to be dealt with. Are you sure it's the landlords responsiblity to intervene beyond providing measures to protect individuals property. How is the lease laid out - individually or as a group?

Also, don't you think it would be more empowering for first daughter to deal with this herself rather than relying on a parent to step in. God it must be hard to sit back but maybe it;s the right course of action on this occasion.

Perhaps your daughter could think about putting her feeligns in writing, and get the rest of the house to do the same. It's often easier to be bolder when you're not confronted by someone laughing in your face. Could it also be that the thief is genuinely confused about boundaries because she would not care if someone helped themselves to her food? She must have very little self respect.\

As far as the landlord goes, if you/they do feel they want to with hold rent they must state clearly what they want the landlord to do and give a time ultimatum for the work to be done backed up by the threat of withdrawl of rent. If it's in writing and you give fair notice for the landlord to respond you are on much steadier ground legally. The landlord WILL NOT throw out the whole house hold so don;t be scared. Your daughter is paying for a reasonable service by providing rent and has the right to expect that service.

Psychology is a great thing.

You don't actually have to do anything. Just tell her that you've noticed and if she doesn't stop your going to have food in the fridge that you have pissed or put dog shit in.

it's not the landlord's responsibility to do anything about this.

withholding rent/threatening to move out will get them nowhere fast if they've signed a contract.

really, the only solution is to make the thief's time in the house so unpleasant that she's forced to leave.

Yep... Completely agree... They may be students but they are supposed to be adults so they should act like adults do. Either talk to the thief directly, or spike the butter with laxitives... :D

get the other house mates to pin the theif down to the floor one on each arms and legs and place a knife under their eye advising them that the very next thing that goes missing will result in a loss of the eye... nothing will get nicked ever again. the added bonus is here that should said theif ever go to the police you simply say that you had threatened to go to the police about their theiving and this was their immature way of dealing with it by making things up....

alternatively, you might want to look into why this person is theiving. is it because they are a cunt or is it because they are broke if it's the later why are they broke? what other issues are there here? is it that they are a lazy good for nothing shit or is it there is something more bacially wrong which means this person cannot look afterthemselves...

It's saddening that each reply thus far ahs been about revenge and not looked for the reasoning behind the actions... is this what has become of urban...???

Ah student housing. It can be an arse

The locking of the cupboards is the best serious alternative Ive heard so far

So long as nobody superglues the locks to be a cunt.....am I allowed to say cunt in suburban? always feel vaugly guilty.....
