Indeed.

Anyway the pace continues; Cesar Sanchez signs as the back up to Mr Gomes between the sticks, Younes Kabouls def gorn to Bent 'Arry, and the Corluka deal with Citeh depends on where you read (prob off though).

Still need a top quality central defender imo, at least - and we could easily lose at least four more.

A very decent analysis in The Guardian: Premier League preview No17: Tottenham Hotspur - well worth a read but I'll pull out a couple of comments:

As a consequence Spurs are surely the most interesting of the 20 sides we will see for the first time in the league this weekend: partly because of their unpredictability, partly because they have bashed 33 goals in eight pre-season games, partly because they may have lost the Premiership's best strike pair and actually improved, but mainly because of the talent they have assembled.

Yet for all the thrilling attacking permutations on the tactics board, the key might be in the treatment room, and the presence (or absence) of King and Jonathan Woodgate. Both are top-class centre-backs, who might be inferior only to Rio Ferdinand among English defenders.

seven of the side that started the first game of last season have gone

a possible starting line-up of Gomes; Hutton, Woodgate, King, Bale; Jenas, Huddlestone; Bentley, Modric, Dos Santos; Bent has an average age of just 23.

Was talking with a couple of old skool supporters last night and we all felt the same, haven't looked forward to a season as much as this for some while - and that's without last years strike partnership . . . :hmm: :)

Man Citeh idiots: Corluka should be ours by now

Citeh are only idiots for even thinking of letting him join youse lot, but then again you need him more than we do:p

Great player; still only 22 and can play three positions. I hope City keep him.

I imagine Levy will be back for your man.

Elsewhere, more deadwood disappears: Hull make Gardner record signing - surely the headline of the week . . .

Things seem to be simplifying:

We need a replacement for Berbatov, and we need a top quality central defender.

We don't need Stalteri, Rocha and Ghaley - and I'm probably irrational in my dislike of Zokora.

Levy is some shrewd fucker.

Blimey, there’s been a Night of the Long Knives, just checked the official website and the first team squad numbers have been sorted – only 20 of them, all the other players who have been ‘first team squad’ until have now not only haven’t been given squad numbers but have been removed from the web site. Those who no longer exist include:

Stalteri
Rocha
Ghaley
Taarabt
Young-Pyo Lee
Prince
The 3rd choice keeper
Possibly one other – I can’t recall

Harsh.

Beaten by high flying Middlesboro eh. If only Spurs could have invested as much on new players and high profile foreign exports. Hang on a minute...

Contenders my arse. Top 10 if they're lucky at this rate, and that's counting on them keeping Berbatov - they were more toothless than a 90 year old hit in the face flush with an anvil today.

I went to the match today. I could do a report with player ratings and everything if you like?

:)

OK.

Within 2 mins of the game starting one of the boro fans knocked another one out, about 5 feet away from us. Clean out. One punch. Blood everywhere, the guy's unconscious on the floor, police and stewards come running over so the attacker legs it up into the stand. Then some idiot at the back starts moaning cos everybody is stood up trying to make sure this bloke is alright. So there's more shouting, threats, police have to tell everybody to calm down. Mental. I was hoping that boro scored first, and it didn't help that we seemed to be surrounded by the biggest baldest men I have ever seen.

Anyway the first half wasn't as exciting. Quite even really. Spurs had most of the ball but there was lots of scampering about and no real end product. Boro had the better chances, with Alves and Tuncay looking particularly effective. Wheater scored but it was disallowed for a foul, which didn't endear the referee to the boro faithful. The half finished as it started, with me looking around nervously waiting for the punches to start flying.

Oh, have I mentioned how pretty Bentley is? Honestly, the man looks like Clark Kent or something. And the brylcreem!! My goodness, he should get himself in an advert. He is seriously missing a trick. He did seem to be playing left wing though, which was weird. But yeah, you can imagine how well his sculpted good looks went down with the bruisers around me. To be fair to him he put up with it all but his corners were pretty awful and, like the rest of the team, he looked good but there wasn't much threat.

Second half was much better. More chances at both ends. Jones made a couple of very good saves - looks like he'll be more than capable of filling Schwarzer's oversized boots. But I honestly couldn't see where a goal was coming from, which just goes to show what I know.

Berbatov came on to a chorus of "he's going to man utd". He didn't look particularly bothered to be fair, and I'm sure he didn't want to be injured.

In the end it was Wheater who scored the opener. Alves, who ran at the defence all afternoon, hit the bar and Wheater was there to whack in the rebound. Big sigh of relief from me, everybody's happy. Wheater gets mobbed on the touchline by the supporters. One of the women stewards just picks em off him and pushes them back. For a minute it looks like one of them is going to be ejected but the police just have a quiet word and tell him not to go round hugging david wheater. Meanwhile Alves is doing a little dance on his own on the goalline. It was quite sweet.

Second goal was a little fortuitous. One of the boro players slices his shot and it hits mido and flies into the back of the net. Mido's a bit of a folk hero on teesside for some reason. He runs over to the corner flag, everybody goes mental. Honestly, it was a bit like I imagine VE day was. Mido is there pointing at the crowd and they are LOVING him. Hugs and kisses all round. Carnival atmosphere. Big bald men smiling - the lot. I'm feeling a lot more relaxed. Somebody calls me "mate", I've arrived. I'm accepted.

Last few minutes play out, Tottenham score a goal up the other end but I didn't really see it. Sorry. Even the Spurs fans don't celebrate much. There are a couple of anxious moments afterwards but Boro see it out. They were pretty good today, counter attacking at pace, nice direct football. Spurs were very pretty but too complicated... and the defence looked a little suspect. Boro are a big physical side and Spurs' collection of very fast midgets seemed to have trouble coping, particularly with Wheater - who was my MOTM.

Right, I promised ratings...

Jones - a couple of very very good saves - 8
Taylor - not sure - 6
Pogatetz - decent. Finished with a bandage on his head. Nice - 7
Huth - very big - 7
Wheater - immense. They love him. I can see why. - 9
O'Neill - one of those unsung players. He did a couple of very good things. - 8
Downing - decent crosses, did well - 8
Tuncay - again, really good. Tricky, quick, likes his backheels - 8
Shawky - no idea. Heard his name a few times but nothing of note - 6
Alves - ran at defenders all day, few good shots - 8
Aliaidiere - quick - 7
Mido - it must be galling for spurs to lose to a goal scored by an ex-player but, when you have as many ex-players as spurs do then I imagine the chances are pretty high - 8

Gomes - looked OK actually. Came for a couple of crosses, didn't have a chance with the goals - 8
Zokora - right back? - 5
Woodgate - takes it up the nose - 6
Dawson - oh dear - 4
Assou-Ekotto - very small. Ran fast - 6
Modric - anonymous - 4
Bentley - have I mentioned how pretty he is? - 5
Lennon - very small. Ran fast - 6
Santos - very small. Ran fast - 6
Bent - needed more service - 6
Jenas - almost forgot him, not a good sign - 6

Ha. Very well and enjpyably put. Oh well, still two weeks to get a defensive midfield thug or two in.

Any particular reason that you were slumming it at the Riverside?

So it seems . . . it may well be 4-2-3-1 (a) as a starting line up away from home, and (b) I suspect in order to defend a lead at home.

If Ramos wants a more aggressive posture he will deploy or revert to 4-4-2.

At least that’s what I think I’ve seen so far, and underlined yesterday when he started with the new formation and reverted to 4-4-2 with the subs around the ¾ mark.

Not sure I like only including Bale in the aggressive formation.

Also far from sure the players have any more than a rudimentary understanding of how to make the new formation work; it's currently making very good players perform very averagely.

Strongly suspect it’ll be 4-4-2 to begin with vs. Sunderland.

Could someone explain to me how you sell your top three strikers in an 8 month period for £55 million (to either top 4 clubs or competitor clubs) and get away with claiming you have aspirations of ‘top 4’?

Yes I can. We are a now striker selling club and should be re-named: Tottenham Hot"SPAR".

"So near, so SPAR!"

Does it bode well boys, that a team that took your rejects also outplayed you today?

I notice we have the honour of opening the first chapter of the BBC's annual magic-realism managerial narrative: A crucial week for Spurs

- I'm sure they'll be 'seeking assurances from the Board' after the Chelsea game. And then the message boards can retort with 'well, we all know what that means', and then the press can write 'fans in turmoil' and then the message boards will respond 'do you think he should go yet?'. And then the press can . . .

And so aother season begins to unfold in the bonkers world of the Premiership, its fans and media.

Busy start to the day with Pavlyuchenko and Corluka both signed - cost you a few bob to have the former on the back of your shirt.

I presume our Bulgarian friend is enroute to Manchester as I write . . .

Looked better at Chelsea.

No time wasted there: Mr Corluka:

Corluka said: "I am delighted to be here because I am coming to a big club with great players, great ambition and also my best friend [Luka Modric] is here so it is a very happy day for me."

Good result against chavski, only saw it on MOTD and listened on 5Live but better than previous 2 results. Good to see the signings at last

My summary:

The media will no doubt return in short time to the entirely bogus myth that Tottenham have ‘spent heavily’ but, in the mean time, my back-of-a-fag-packet maths suggests Tottenham received in transfer fees somewhere in the low to mid £70 mill’s and spent in the low £60’s - having spent about £10 mill (net) in January. About all square on the calendar year then, saving the Board and shareholders the trouble of investing funds from a 57 game season that included a Cup win and 10 UEFA matches, very considerable income from the highest TV profile in the club’s history, as well as profits from match day turnover and the Premier League itself.

In terms of the first-team squad, we may be around three fewer (10 out, 7 in), though once the new yoof is taken into account, that only evens up the ins/outs of the January window.

From a shareholders pov, there’s no question (imo) Levy sold Keane and Berbatov at the very top of their respective markets. Levy took a modest hit on Kaboul – his Director of Football taking a slightly bigger hit to his reputation.

Since JR arrived, it appears we have a new defence and half a new midfield. That’s been achieved at a cost to the forwards, the top three having left since he arrived and having only been partially replaced.

An awful lot of ‘deadwood’ has been moved on this window, and very few of that ilk now remain. Two more notable additions in the yoof ranks means we continue to invest in potential.

So, significantly stronger at the back, classier in midfield, and largely untested up front – though we have to assume appreciably weaker.

Fwiw, I like the balance of the squad very much, but the price paid – in the forwards – has been heavy indeed. The dealings this window (to the best of my knowledge):

Out:
Gardner
Tainio
Chimbonda
Robinson
Keane
Malbranque
Cerny
Kaboul
Young-Pyo Lee
Berbatov

In:
Paul-Jose Mpoku (15-year old)
Modric
dos Santos
Bostock (16-17-year old)
Gomes
Sanchez
Bentley
Corluka
Pavlyuchenko
Frazier - on loan from Man Utd

Twilight Zone – not in any squad or on the web site:
Ghaley
Rocha
Boatang
Tarrabat

Wishing Berbatov well if its what he wants then off you trot, we'll miss him though.

Still fairly confident for the season, we've got a stronger squad and some excellent additions.

coys

Mad init; £16 mill for Modric, £16 mill for Bentley, £14 mill for Pavlyuchenko, £8-9 mill for each of Gomes and Corluka . . . on second thoughts, I suppose we spent almost as much as we made this window.
