These newfangled mobiles that do the internet - clue me in.

The Nokia E71 is a popular contender that manages a decent battery life. What else matters to you? Camera? Video? Size?

I really like the E71 too, and it's not a touch screen so at least that bit can't go wrong! :D I've got a 5800 and it's great :)

I don't like having restrictions on how I use my phone, for example using only itunes with an iphone and the syncing to a PC thing, would you mind spangles?

say what?

why would i need to connect it to my computer?

ok - so how long do iphone users get out of their batteries, on average?

24 hours ish if not using it heavily.

Thing is, when you download apps and use the web and facebook and everything, it goes down quicker. I use the iPhone more (well I do) for this sort of thing than I have done with any other phone.

I just plug it in by my bedside table every night. It's rare I run out.

To put stuff on there, music, films. back up your contacts and emails etc. :)

With iphones you HAVE to use itunes, with other phones it views them as a removeable drive and you drag and drop into your phone's folder.

Anything from 24 hours - 4 days depending on whether 3G is on, whether you spank the iPod or video or the internet or whether I've actually spoken to anyone
Seriously though, I've never been caught out in a "OMG! I hate this phone's battery power! I'm out of contact - WTF will I dooooooo!" type way.
The 20% low power warning is ample and always gives me enough juice to get home or to a power point. If I know I'm away from base with a lot of use on a day I just bung the wall plug charger in the bag - big deal. a car charger lives in the car too.

And, annoyingly, you can only sync it with one computer. If your iPhone is synced with your home PC, and you want to add an MP3 at work, you're fucked.

It's pretty fucking crap. My only real complaint about the iPhone. Other than that, it's a total joy to use and own.

Basically this. /\/\ Which is why I've never understood when people wail on about it's battery life and the lack of removable batteries.

ah - ok. so any media i used on an iphone would have to be legit... hmm...

My nokia seems to last ages longer than my boyfriend's iphone so it's interesting you say that. Mayeb he uses it too much, his phone is always running out of battery! (or maybe it's all an excuse :hmm: )

Spangles - I don't know about that, I download stuff for him and he drags and drops it into itunes ok?

what if you replace your pc???

or wipes your data if on a new PC, non? :D

There are ways of recovering your data.

Also:

If purchased content is synced to your iPhone or iPod touch is not found on your computer the next time you sync, iTunes will offer to transfer these items back to your computer. Your computer must be authorized to use your iTunes Store account for this feature to work.

Well that's a relief.

I'm in the market for a smartphoney type thing too. My Nokia 6220c is doing my nut in (although Opera Mini 5 beta is brilliant on it). Camera needs to be decent (for a phone) which may rule put the iPhone for me (I don't care about fancy app gadgets and shite).

Relative cost will be an issue too, as I'm 12 months into an 18 month contract with 3.

of course if you wanted a proper browsing experience that's very close to browsing on a pc (with the caviat that it's a tiny screen, the keyboard won't be as good etc) on yer phone you should wait a couple of weeks and get the nokia n900. Supports some firefox plug ins like adblock, plays flash stuff, etc.

likely to be about 35 quid on t mobile 18 month contract though.

anyway, so it seems like a tossup between the palm pre and the iphone 16gb

what are they like for breaking down? will in need *shudder* insurance?

I know.
Certain people bang on about it like it's the ultimate issue, and sure, removeable batteries can be useful - but in the real world of 24 hour cycles, who can honestly say it's ever once been a life & death situation?
So once in a blue moon you're actually out & about without access to mains electrictity for more than an hour or so. Annoying, but so what? Shit happens with any piece of portable electronices. & when it does your removable battery has probably been so long knocking around in the bottom of your that it's lost it's charge anyway :D

I'd always get insurance for those "dropped it down the loo"/"washed it in a jean pocket" moments, but I get free insurance with my bank account.
