There will be Blood

Bingo

Shitty-shoed bastard
Bit long, intense, enjoyed the portrayal of that era in American history...
loved the priest character and how he evolved thru the film... Is this based on factual stuff or made up, anyone?

Rubbish film no sympathy with the characters just lost interest after a bit. Kept on thinking about how nice it would be to get out of the cinema and have a drink and a chat with my friend.

I also could not understand what the DDL character's motivation was. He showed a bit of enthusiasm for community building at the beginning but really it was just to get the locals on board for his project. Didn't really lead anywhere. There was no female interest in the film at all. Towards the end he was shown in a gloomy house with a bowling alley. So I suppose he was interested in bowling a little bit. :hmm:

In between he showed a lot of angry feelings about his brother, son, father but it all seemed so cliched. Not convincing at all. IMO

There was a bit of nice photography shots of the oil industry gushers, flames and blowouts but how long this film is nearly three hours FFS! :(:(:(:(

Why am I hilarious?

Well the person I went to see this film with last night agreed with me. It will be interesting to see what other people think.

By the way rather than getting personal. What do you think about the things I said about the film particularly the fact that it was hard to feel any kind of sympathy with any of the characters.

You can look at nice camera work for a bit, but if you don't sympathise with any of the characters you just begin to lose interest after a bit.

At least I do.

There was no character development in this film.

OK

1. No sympathy with any of the characters
2. No character development
3. Too long

I think if a film fails on all three of those points, its completely valid to think that its not a good film.

And that is NOT having rigid conception of what constitutes a good film

Enormously great films with no character development:
  • Wizard of Oz
  • Rear Window
  • The Birds
  • The Seventh Seal

Pretty fucking great film with character development:

  • There will be Blood

:)

I liked it a lot. It isn't a *great* film but it is a good film. And the ending was one of the best bits - I don't think I'll ever forget him roaring "I AM THE THIRD REVELATION" as he chases the godboy around the room :D

And another thing is... The film is full of cheapshot one-liners (made in order to construct misleading trailers I suspect) which don't have much support from the plot leading up to them.

Eg. "Why do I not own this land!"

Answer: Because you at no stage made any effort to buy it Duhhhh :D

The phrase "character development" can mean two different things in the context of a film. One that the character changes or is reformed during the film. That is what I was initially referring to. I think that is true of most of the characters in this film although Eli does a trite flip flop.

But a second meaning of "character development" is that the character is established as being a believable one to the people watching the film in the first place. IMO the main character in this film is two dimensional and wooden and is never developed in the sense of being introduced to the viewers. Perhaps that is why it is difficult to have any sympathy with him or any of the other characters for that matter.
