There Will be Blood

saw this tonight and i have to say that i thought this was a superb film, great performances that i found compelling, fantastic soundtrack that added to the sense of drama and intention, beautifully shot and flowing edit so that 2 and half hours flew by, intelligent movie making that drew me in completely and allowed a story to unfold that didn't feel the need to slap you about the face to make its points. i can't think of many better films i've seen for years gone by, i can't agree with some of the criticisms here, it drove me and pal to the pub to discuss for an hour and half afterwards cos we were so excited about what we'd seen. top top stuff imo.

hear hear

absolutely terrible film this. Completely missed the point of the original book.

As it's not actually an adaptation of Upton Sinclair's novel Oil!, it may be you who is missing the point. The film only uses a brief section of the book as a jumping off point and then turns into something completely different. One clue may be that the film has a different main protagonist from the novel.

I enjoyed this when I saw it. One thing I noticed about the reviews (I'm thinking principally of Mark Kermode) was how new and different it was supposed to be, but I found it reminiscent of an old-fashioned Hollywood melodrama.

Just saw this on iplayer and thought it was superb, I wish I'd seen it on the big screen. Brilliant soundtrack, has Jonny Greenwood done any other film soundtracks?

A bit of everything really. It's hard to pin him down to one particular style. Each film has been so different to the other.

That's more or less exactly what strummerville said in his post which you edited down to one sentence. :hmm:

I'd beg to differ though. His first four films were indebted to Robert Altman's cinema, though he increasingly moved from Altman's naturalism to something more stylised. There Will Be Blood was a clear break and feels more like a film by a classic US iconoclast like Orson Welles.

Its called paraphrasing.

Bullshit. Punch Drunk Love owes nothing to Altman. I will agree there is the Altman influence some of his movies but to suggest his first four movies were 'indebted' to that particular style is not true.

magnolia and boogie nights are undoubtedly altmanesque, though he is also in debt to the likes of scorsese and some of the french 'masters'. he's obviously a massive film geek.

Have you seen Altman's A Perfect Couple ? Ever noticed that the main musical theme for Punch Drunk Love comes from Altman's Popeye ?

In any case, I didn't say that to put down Anderson, there is nothing wrong with learning from a personal hero. Magnolia owes a lot to Short Cuts, but I actually think it's a more interesting film. Punch Drunk Love at times feels a bit like a sub-plot that got cut out of Magnolia and it's not that far removed from Altman's more intimate films

Considering Altman is a seminal film maker and has made some awesome films I didnt even take it as a put down. A lot of interviews Ive read he cites Demme and Scorsese as his two greatest influences-but its clear to me (anyhow) that his films are influenced by many different styles of film making and I think it's too simplistic to say he owes a lot to Altman when clearly Altman is just one of many influences.

finally got round to watching this tonight, and enjoyed immensely - one issue though: it felt like the ending - despite being a fine scene - was rushed (maybe in editing, maybe they ran out of time, i dunno) - like huge chunks had been taken out in the build up. otherwise, bang on throughout. there isn't anyone better working in hollywood atm is there?
