Look, if you really like them, if they make you happy, buy them Milesy.

We won't laugh at you. Small children won't point at you in the street. Posh folks with yachts won't salute you and commed you on purchasing a pair of deck shoes, a kind of chinos of the fottwear world. Well, not much anyway.

:p

i rarely fall over to be honest, PieEye, but thanks for the concern :)

the step-daughter falls over loads though. she's like a broken weeble.

Vans Slip-Ons are great and well comfy, i am wearing some now, you won't slip in them unless you're on a wet tube station floor (such as Brixton) then you're in trouble, the Waffle Sole (TM) sucks up all the water into the little waffle holes and causes havoc with your shoe to floor friction!

Is this more of skate culture's commodification of affluent mainstream sportcasualculture? See the fondness for polo shirts amongst the Beastie Boys....

Nope, Vans have been doing these for donkeys years, polo shirts too:o

Yuk.

Yuk and double yuk.
There's just no style there.

yes they are like deck shoes, PieEye, and they've been around for years and years. the skaters and BMX dudes probably just started off wearing deck shoes for the grip, and then vans started making them in funkier colours. more of a functionality thing primarily than an image thing, i reckon.
Deck shoes  Are you thinking of going on an old person's cruise?

:D

he'll be going alone on his old persons cruise.

he'll be going alone to the shops.

I will not tolerate being married to a 31 year old emo kid

oh. my. god.

he........IS ONE!

in 1989 i worked in barratts shoes on saturdays.

we sold lots and lots of ugly navy blue and whte canvas deck shoes with double elasticated gussets. They were very cheap (about £8 for the adult ones) and so did next to mothing to contribute to our fiercely driven system of individual sales targets.

They were also naff. Even as a fifteen year old, I knew they were naff.

And possibly the least flattering footwear a woman could ever wear.

yeah the navy ones are ugly. although i did have a pair when i was about 12. except - i've just remembered - they were black. not navy. which means i didn't have the ones that spanglechick is on about. in fact most of them are ugly. but so what? not everything has to be gorgeous. ugly and stupid can be good

"gusset"

oh god - yes, i forgot they came in black.

your options: black canvas with white trim
white canvas with navy trim
navy canvas with white trim

navy slightly puffy fabric with white trim
white slightly puffy fabric with navy trim (these were slicker and more expensive).

I like them. Underground Shoes did a similar thing that had leopard print instead of the checkerboard pattern, and they were completly animal free, and made in the UK! The wet dream of ethical shoe buying :p But I can't find them on their website anymore :(

Sounds kinda comfy

Then again, I am reaching sensible footwear age. A Scholl catalogue arrived mysteriously in the post yesterday, addressed to me but using my never-used married surname. I think my mum's put me on their mailing list. It'll be Ecco gift vouchers next. Or elasticated gussets :(

rock on milesy!

edit: not sure they go with your socks though...are they maroon? :(

another edit: were they cheap? if so, you can join me in nu-chic-ness.

I saw Milesy on the bus this morning wearing those shoes. I regret to say that I didn't say hello.

Frankly it was a little embarrassing. He was sat next to a small man wearing a gold-buttoned blazer, a salmon pink shirt and some deck shoes. Milesy was also casting envious eyes at the emo kids behind him, who wouldn't let him, even with his new shoes, join their whingeing selves on the back seat. I think I saw an outstretched palm raised and the word 'grandad' uttered.

He's trapped in a hellish halfway house now that Milesy. I felt for him.

:(

i like those white all-stars that have got 'eyes' for laces, but - hey - no laces! They're great.

Don't like those vans, though. Horrible.
