Theft of Wheelie Bin

if you lived in Lewisham, then this may have been yours:

"Villages warned over bin thefts
WHEELIE bins are being stolen from villages around Cambridge in what police believe is a spate of "identity theft".
Around 80 wheelie bins have been reported stolen from the area since South Cambridgeshire District Council introduced them last September, adding to growing Identity Theft concern.
Police believe thieves are taking the bins and then rifling through them to find bank details and credit card numbers so they can steal money from people's accounts by pretending to be them when paying for goods.

None of the bins have yet turned up and police have asked people who see abandoned bins to call them. There have been reports of a wheelie bin from Lewisham turning up in the Dead Sea.
A police spokeswoman said: "We have had reports of approximately 80 bins being stolen from rural areas. People are stealing them to go through them and get credit card slips so they can make fraudulent payments.

"When there were black sacks it was easy for people to go through them but with the wheelie bins they are too deep and they have to take them and empty them.

"We advise anyone to shred anything with personal details, even receipts from supermarkets which could have account numbers on and especially anything with names and addresses on. People should keep wheelie bins in a secure place like locked to a gate.

"We have not been informed when bins have been found so people should update us if they find any. If anyone sees one on the estate that hasn't been taken in with the rest of them they should report it to us."

South Cambridgeshire District Council has said that if anyone has a bin stolen then they should report it and get a crime number and they will then be given a new bin free of charge. "

There was a small spate of stolen wheelie bin incidents near where I live a while back.

They reckoned it people who used to tip out the rubbish, then use the bin to haul around scrap metal (including road signs, bits of scaffolding and whatever else they could get their hands on), and they used to weigh in the scrap metal. Apparently.

The very nice young Constable from Kennington mentioned that he would check the CCTV, and suggested that I might be interested in signing up for a Victim Support Group. But I don't feel a victim - just a bit of a fraud for being forced by the Lambeth Council knobbers to waste police time.

You are not alone

well i now have two wheelie bins in my front garden - i've no idea where the extra one came from...perhaps the binmen couldn't be arsed to put it back in the right place. it's been there two weeks and no-one has bothered to collect it yet. so, tricky skills, you're welcome to it!

it's full spec, BTW ;)

Wheelie bin theft is a big thing round here - there is a sisable amount of easilly recyclable material involved - moreso & less easilly identifiable than roadsigns, street furniture etc.

Many rural areas now have "binwatch" schemes as the big bins given to isolated houses are particularly prized!

Bollocks - the bloody bin has been stolen again. I make that four in six months :(

Well if you want a free bin there's an orange one in Regent road that's been gradually accumulating rubbish for a month or so - clearly doesn't belong to anyone...

If it makes you feel any better my bamboo was stolen from my front garden - which is a serious effort since it was in a massive pot that must weigh at least 40 kilos. My neighbour reckons that it looked so unhappy under our scaffolding that somebody 'rescued' it.... :D
