the 'worst cover versions' thread

The Massive attack cover of "Light my fire". It's an inexplicable piece of crap tacked on at the end of what is otherwise one of (IMO) the best albums ever made.

Lily Allen warbling through some Kaiser Chiefs 'hit'. A most unpleasant combination.

"Oh my God I can't believe it'.

No, neither could I.

eta: Mark Ronson is equally to blame
It is just so, so shit.

If ever a song was skinned alive and then buggered, it's "Here's Where the Story Ends" by Tin Tin Out. The Sundays original is beautiful.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Sweden's finest, the legendary Roy Roxy Dance Orchestra, offering their version of that old classic 'I'm in the mood for love':

Leaden footed murder.

Guns and Roses - 'Sympathy for the devil' and 'knocking on heavens door'

It gets worse -

Must rank as one of the greatest 'what were they thinking?' scenarios ever.

Ouch! That is bad for the ears.

Smells Like Teen Spirit has suffered some fantastically bad covers over the years, often by otherwise top performers - Tori Amos, who I love, took it round the bikesheds and beat it senseless as did Patti Smith.

There is only one contender for worst 'Smells Like...' cover (I guarantee you won't watch this til the end)-

On the upside, Jason Orange looks smacked off his tits :D

Lily Allen ruining Specials songs at Glastonbury a few years ago. The terrible irony of it all was that several members of the Specials actually joined her on stage.

Am I the *only one who (quite) likes this one, despite the liberties Rob takes with the timing at some points (the lyrics speed up to a totally unbelievable staccato in places)?

I gather that by way of reply Joan did a really sensitive rendition of "Freewheel Burning." Sadly, no video copies remain :)

P.S. *Apparently not; the Allmusic reviewer liked it too. "A galloping, fully metallic reimagining of the Joan Baez folk tune "Diamonds and Rust" is a smashing success, one of the most effective left-field cover choices in metal history."

Those Tony Bennett albums where he gets modern pop stars to sing the old standards can be pretty bad. Sounded like a good idea but it's usually just Tony Bennett singing and then some chancer coming on and ruining the songs

The Dropkick Murphys covering the old Irish songs is really horrible as well.

TATU's cover of 'How Soon is Now?' is really confusing. It has a charm of it's own

Mountain covering any number of Bob Dylan songs. Really, why bother?

Yeah, I know what you mean even though I like Mountain, and Leslie West in particular - an awesome guitarist IMO.

I don't know any Dylan covers by the band but "Roll Over Beethoven" blows :(

I'm stuggling to imagine - comedic value aside - how a metal cover of anything can be fail to be other then shit.

Are you saying that from the perspective of someone who doesn't like heavy metal though?

I'm coming to the conclusion that there isn't a lot of point discussing the question of whether metal is any good or not. People either seem to think it's great or an awful noise, and there doesn't seem to be much possibility of dialogue between the two camps.

I like some metal, but certainly less than I used to and in smaller doses.
