The world's best railway stations

How does that work then?

In one direction they are a running stride long,(in the direction that people tend to run across the hall) while in the other they are a walking stride wide,(in the direction where people tend to walk across) evidently this helps as people are aware where their feet are all the time and instead of looking at their feet thye keep their heads up and so avoid collision!

The treads and risers on the steps are similarly proportioned correctly so you have no need to break or check your stride going down the stairs.

There are also other little architectural tricks, like the entrances all slope down to the main hall, this forces people to look up as they enter so they see the magnificient ceiling!

Who gave you this explanation?

I am somewhat sceptical about this.

Are people in NY particularly superstitious about treading on the gaps between paving slabs?

has anyone mentioned swindon yet?

I got off there once. I remember, on this most non-descript generic station, seeing a commemorative plaque.

It was celebrating the opening of platform four. A platform so anonymous that it could be anywhere. Symbolic perhaps, with Swindon being the UK's "most average" town.

Platform four wasn't bad, it certainly wasn't good. It wasn't anything. Welcome to Swindon.

A bit disappointing for a town that once had what must have been one of the largest railway works in the world.

And that was designed by a bloke called Fred!

Those Empire architects sure knew a thing about serving up impressive public buildings.

Interestingly I've just been reading a book that places some of blame for the decline of Empire at the feet of the vast public projects built by inflated bureacracies full of men intent on 'leaving their mark'.

Not that I mind the decline of Empire, but it's interesting stuff cos we don't learn much of the history of Empire in general.

Just been through Budapest's fabulous Keleti station again - they've restored some mental frescoes on one side of it and are finally on to propping up and restoring the collapsing-looking international tickets office (the whole thing's filled with wooden props ATM) and they still fill in lots of forms in triplicate by hand when you buy your ticket. But they've now got card readers so they don't have to phone your credit card through anymore!

A wonderful Austro-Hungarian relic:

There's a nice, but simple restaurant in what once must have been an incredibly grand and fashionable spot when the place was built.

Does it still have any of the old independent Kaffeestuben on the lower concourse or have they all been replaced by Starbucks, MacDonalds and the like?

Fortunately it hasn't been totally done over.
For real crassness Berlin Hauptbahnhof takes the biscuit, IMO. Lovely station, but TOO MANY CHAIN STORES!

The public art work by Narcissus Quagliata at Kaoshiung's MRT in Taiwan is pretty impressive.

Whilst we're on big US termini, here's Michigan Central Station (abandoned), if I've not already posted it:

Michigan is a state, that's Detroit station.

No wonder it closed, who takes a train in motor city?

When the Motown bods moved to LA that abandoned station became the HQ of Gang Culture, Murder City. A very dangerous place.

Those pics must be recent, if you went in there 5 years ago losing your camera would have been the least of your worries.

I have always been excited by arriving at Brighton Station.
It's enormous !
One of my favourites but ............
(Prob should not have mentioned it on this thread.)
