The world chess championship tournament, Mexico 2007

Yeah, Rybka too. But be wary of computer assessments in positions of material unbalance, they're very unreliable, not least (though not only) because the computer will normally underestimate compensation for material down.

But yes, the fact that it says Ra7 should tell you something. If you see the computer predicting a strange move it's always worth asking - why?

The Catalan is all about the g2-bishop, though.

Have to go to bed soon (I'm an hour ahead of the UK here).

So he did: and Morozevich even earlier (in terms of moves, anyway: I understand Aronian was the first to resign). Crushing wins for Anand and Kramnik.

Round two games here (no report yet).

Round three at eight:

Morozevich v Svidler
Anand v Kramnik
Grischuk v Aronian
Leko v Gelfand

Predictions: wins for Morozevich and Leko, Anand v Kramnik to be drawn in short order.

There's some one-sided clocks at the moment, suggesting that Kramnik, Morozevich, Aronian and Leko have all out-prepared their opponents. Which in the second of these cases is odd because I was sure, knowing the variation a bit, that it was Svidler who'd played the unexpected moves.

Right, having bought myself some time by puking up my dinner:

Kramnik appears to be all over Grischuk, quite likely on home analysis (look at the clock!). I should know a great deal more about the Morozevich v Anand line than I do, as I have several books on it, but rather than look them up I'm going to go by the clock and assume Anand is comfortable. Svidler is maybe a smidgeon better against Gelfand (more space) but I can't believe it's anything and my view of Aronian v Leko is perhaps skewed by the fact that I have an appalling record on the White side of Hedgehog formations....

what the blooming 'eck is a "hedgehog formation"?
heard of dragons and stone walls and even a hillbilly but?

did like gelfands game the other night draw after 100 moves against leko. now thats what i call tenacity. passed pawn on the h file and pushing for a queen but none of the two players willing to let the point go without a true fight. by my reckoning they start at 2 pm local time, seven hours behind the
uk, which makes for a 9 pm start. these guys were still grinding things out after six hours (i think) over the board.
just want to say after the first round when no one wants to lose things look to be heating up nicely. heres to more good games.

Morozevich has the pawn on c3, I dont like the look of his position though. Kings Indian isn't it?

*edit* if morozevich gets a draw from this he has done well, blacks g pawn is helpless.......

Well, Kramnik settled for a draw quite quickly, which surprises me. Anand won and leads. Morozevich did indeed lose. It wasn't a King's Indian, no, it was a Ragozin Variation of the Queen's Gambit Declined. Trendy recently but Black tends to get behind on development.

Chessbase aren't ready yet (probably because their team have had problems with a cancelled flight) and the official site is farting about so games can be played through here.

Ah ok, it was the positioning of the pawns that made me think that. It surprised me that Kramnik settled for a draw also, after 24 moves I think.

I do like chess me......

He doesn't seem to have had as much of an advantage as he had in the previous two games, and he didn't win either of them.

Does anyone have any good links on how to play a good Middlegame? I've got loads on opening games and defences and all that jazz but it all goes a little bit weary after that.
