The Wire

Series 4 has just finished its first run on FX, but they are also trumpeting "see the finest show on television - from its very first episode" in July 2007 - so I guess/hope they are planning a marathon blowout showing all 4 series so far.

Still need to buy season 4 on DVD to re-watch obsessively and 'figure out', make all the carefully-plotted connections I'm too thick to take in at first glance and so on. But I don't think it's even available in the US yet so will have to wait.

For anyone who hasn't seen series 4 yet: amazingly enough, The Wire just doesn't run out of steam. It might have seemed impossible at the end of s3, with many *rather important* characters now *out of their usual dramatic setting*, for them to keep up the tension. But they do. For me series 4 was easily the most heartbreaking of any of the run - maybe not quite as chock full of "iconic moments" and quotable quotes than earlier ones, but if anything, even stronger on the drama and characterisation side.

Roll on series 5. After that .... what will be left to live for?

Lifetime Emmy awards for everyone involved in The Wire, from me....

We were lucky enough to get hold of series 4 off bit torrent before it'd even finished its run in the USA...not that I'm bragging, mind :D

It's godlike genius. I might be prepared to copy it if the person receiving it would then send it on to another Wirehead in Need.

there is dude, series 4 was about the kids, weebays son, namind. dukie etc. twas all about the education system, how it also in a failing city is failing its citizens, its future citizens. it also focus' on tommy carcettis mayoral run and rule.

less violent, and without as much input from stringer ( one of the best performances of a character ive ever seen, stringer bell could stride across a room and just owned it, presence in spades!) but it makes it for it in a real portrayal of the citys hopelessness. scenes where mothers sells her sons food and clothes for dope, mcnultys battles to stay straight etc.

my god the wire, ive been banging on about for years, its just real, its just the best.

my favourite quote...

Underling at meeting of the Co-op

:"You, uh, want me make some minutes or shit?"

Stringer Bell - "You wanna take notes at a motherfucking criminal conspiracy? you lost your mind nigger?"

I guess it was just the way he said it! 5th season is in production, thank god for HBO, the quote above is right, despite across the board critical acclaim noone in america watches it, it costs a fortune to make and is a dead loss. But HBO still make it, because they know its the best there is, so respect to them for that.

i love the little surprise in the gay bar episode 11 series 3!

Blink and you miss it, but it adds a new depth to the character.

Knowing the Wire thats all we'll ever see.

We finished watching Series 3 the other night. It was almost Shakespearean in its denouement - amazing TV.

As complete Wire saddos, we even watched the discussion with cast and writers at the end - and was amazed to discover that the guy who plays Stringer Bell is British (and clearly a bit of a heart throb over in the US now).

I watched the discussions as well, McNulty is also a Brit.

Clarke Peters, who plays Freamon, has been a resident of the UK for nearly 30 years and is a well respected stage musical actor - he's the lead in the current production of Porgy & Bess and is the writer of Five Guys Named Moe

Is he?

I fucking love this show too - am still in series one but have got in 5hrs between now and sunday evening so I think I'm officially hooked.

I also am getting obsessed with McNulty :o
It's not my fault.

Wait till you get to series 2, early on there are scenes of him lying around naked in bed.

*faints*

Alright, he is drooling hungoverly on the mattress, but still.

He has a very nice arse :o

I wonder where he lives? :)

They can ride off on matching polo ponies

I'd settle quite happily for Omar in any case - he is a verrry beautiful man...

At this point I feel the urge to apologise for dragging the Wire thread downmarket into whatever the women's equivalent of Nuts is (Flaps?). I'm so shallow.

:)
