I remember reading Richard Price's novel "Clockers" when it came out about 10 years ago. Its very similar to The Wire, which is hardly surprising as Price is one of the main writers.

I love it, second only to "Deadwood" imo.

But when it comes down to it, it's just a soap opera. It's not super-realistic - super-realistic series don't have humorous fatmen and code-breaking idiots and 5 minutes where no-one says snything but fuck, but really expressively.

The Wire is Buffy. Less action, a bit more realistic. But it's just a genre series with an arc.

It's nicely produced, textural long-form drama. But that's all.

I am inclined to agree with you. I enjoy watching it but it didn't make me spunk all over the screen like a lot of the fanboys.
It's a decent cop show with well-structured storytelling and some entertaining performances, but that doesn't make it the best tv series, like, ever.

My screen has stayed totally jizz free throughout! Is it the best tv series ever? I don't know. It's the best I've ever seen though. I thought it was brilliant.

just started watching the first season of Homicide - Life on the Streets after reading the book (which has various things from The Wire in it as well)

tis good and has some actors from The Wire in it. not as complex but a good investigative cop show

At least four ex-Homicide detectives appear in The Wire at some point by my last count.
