The Wire - What's all the fuss about?

There's a lot of bollocks spoken/written about The Wire. To anyone who hasn't seen it, I would just say watch at least four or five episodes before making a judgement on it. You may find it slow to start with, but stick with it.

Right, I'm giving this another go. One episode at a time, let it sink in properly.

The thing about it is that you can't miss a second of it, so you need to watch it with no distractions. As someone mentioned earlier: "all the pieces matter". I constantly find myself rewinding it as I've missed a tiny bit of dialogue.

I like it...

Slowly getting through it (much slower than Sopranos) and it is a grower I think. Only have seasons 1 and 5 which is annoying as I can't afford to get into it as it means buying DVDs :(

No it doesn't. It means stealing it off the interweb.

It's about time someone watched all of it and fucking hated it.

I love it but the fan boys must stop frothing and spunking and finding yet more metaphors.

i gave up mid season 3, i tried to like it because Charlie Brooker told me, but i didnt like it.

Incidently I'm reading David Simon's non fiction "Homicide a year on the Killing Streets" and it is fan fucking tastic.

That Mc Nulty/Bunk Scene "When you came to fuck me, you were gentle, you didn't just bend me over a patrol car"

"It was your first time I wanted it to be special"

is lifted straight from reality.

I've just finished it and you're right, it is fantastic. I recognised loads of stuff from The Wire.

What I can say is that I have not heard a single soul outside U75 (by that I mean real life not online) ever talking about The Wire. Indeed, I didn't know what it was for a long time. I know it's shown on a minor channel, but still it's bizarre...

I hear it from everyone at work and on here. Blah blah the wire is great.
It doesn't look like my cup of tea at all but I think I should have a look at some point.

I'm hoping someone will lend me the DVDs one day.

i watched the whole lot and hated it, that's 48 hours of my life i'm not getting back.

Interesting.

What do people who like the wire also like? Thinking about the folks in the office they all like tedious shit like the Sopranos and the godfather films.

Alarm bells are ringing. I'm not spending money on this.

How is it posey? It's based on real life and it portrays a side of America not normally seen on television.

As for self-conscious, it's hardly post-modern. If anything, the density of dialogue harks back to older forms eg theatrical plays.

Are you sure you weren't watching Wire In The Blood? :D

Sorry, I was in a vague mood. I was thinking about Wire In The Blood

I was a late convert in all honesty, because I simply don't watch much screen stuff anymore. My tastes are almost exclusively sci-fi films, the rest of the time I'd rather a book.

But the Wire works. On many different levels it works, both stylish, cool and complex. It's well worth stealing from the internet imo.

Other than the 7 episode drama 'Generation Kill' I haven't invested any time in a series since.

What mightily amuses me is that nobody I know IRL has seen any of it, and internet people have only started to climb onto iconclasm soapboxes in the last six months. When it was virtually ignored (first three series) we didn't hear a peep from slaters. Now something popular has crossed the radar:D

Season 2 was £15 on Amazon the other week.

That might be true but I never felt compelled to try to follow the whole story. There were things in the second series I couldn't quite get my head around and some of the politics in the later series went over my head but like not understanding all the drug dealing slang, it didn't seem to matter.

Anyone got the link for watching them all online, want to send it to a mate.

Plan to watch them all again myself once the weather gets shit and the nights get dark.

I went into zavvi during my lunch hour. They had The Shield Series 1 for £12 so I picked that up. Then I saw they had the book ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ for £8 so I picked that up too. I wondered around aimlessly for a few more minutes and then took my purchases to the PAY HERE bit. The woman behind the counter said ‘Is there anything else I can help you with?’

‘No, thank you’, I replied.

She looked at my choices of product. ‘Are you a Wire fan, then?’

‘Oh yes.’
