The Wire on Culture Show tonight

Im basing it on the fact that it's gained relatively few viewers wherever its been shown and that similar US series have generally fared badly when shown on UK terrestrial TV.

The Wire has been a critical rather than commercial success, HBO came close to cancelling on a number of occasions due to poor viewing figures.

Hmm, but HBO shows do have a reputation for quality, and I do think that The Wire's reputation will precede it now - lots of people will be giving it word of mouth recommendations to those who haven't seen it, and I reckon enough excitement could be generated for it to attract a good share of viewers

Where else has it been shown? And when?

They do have a rep for quality, that hasnt stopped a number of very high quality shows being cancelled because they were commerical flops (thing Carnivale, Deadwood etc).

I think your overestimating how many people are fans in the UK, I'm sure some people would watch but I very much doubt it would be a big hit on British terrestrial TV after its proved a commercial failure on satellite.

The US, Uk, Canada, Australia, France, Poland... loads of places according to Wikipedia.

Wiki isn't The Truth ;) (e2a - on about your other comment about it)

I reckon The Wire would do brilliantly actually, if they stuck it on BBC4

How are you defining brilliantly? BBC4 has very low viewing figures. I'm sure it would get an audience, but I doubt it would be big enough for them to be interested in buying it.

BTW did you ever see the French Police drama Spiral on BBC4? twas brilliant, wish they showed more foreign labnguage series like that.

Nah, never saw Spiral

Yeeeees because as I said before, lots of people have watched it now, and are recommending it word of mouth. it's all over the friggin internet man!

Lots of people havent watched it in terms of numbers of viewers, its been a ratings disaster for HBO; and theres any number of shows that are 'all over the internet' but have been commercial failures - just look at Firefly for example.

Just because you really, really, really love something it doesnt mean other people are going to!

No, I'm saying people have dld it then watched it, so that's not gonna show on ratings, is it? But the people who have dld it, are talking about it. God this is painful :p

And for the record, I don't really really really love it. I've seen one series, that I thought was alright, and I'd like to watch the rest. Alright? :p

Still the highest ranking season length dvd whatsit on Amazon - outselling Heros season 2, and also the 4th series is up there. Lowest positions for many months though.

It's really made for dvd viewing imo, so it's great to see it so successful in that medium List

people have DOWNLOADED IT. ;)

and watched it, and lots loved it, but cause it was downloaded it wont show on any ratings scale, but it would most likely be a success on telly.

ITS NOT TV ITS FUCKING HBO. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :p

Yes, do you have figures for the numbers who have downloaded it? the fact that there is little buzz about the show outside fo a small circle, and that HBO dont appear to consider the numbers dowbnloading it to be significant in terms of the shows reach would indicate that the number is comparitively small.

I can't, I'm sick of trying to explain it! Just read what I've put

But what you've put doesnt make any sense, you dont appear to have an argument just repeating that you'll think it will do well if its put on terrestrial tv, you havent even attempted to address any of my points.

I have no idea how many people downloaded it.

Even the HBO exec's have no way of knowing that.

But anyway, lets just wait and see what happens then.

It'll either be a go'er or it'll flop.

It's not life or death is it? :)

I'm not arguing as such

I have

You've just chosen to ignore them, using your 'evidence' garnered from the back of the dvds and wiki :D

Which part of my 'evidence garnered from the back of dvds and Wiki' dont you believe?

Are you really saying that the writers and producers who talk about the possible of the cancellation of the show in the dvd extras are lying?

Or that the Wire hasnt been shown in the places I named from the Wikipedia article (US, Australia, France etc)?
