Was a massive fan in my teen years and pretty much learnt to play guitar via listening to townshend.
The holy trinity of Guitar bass drums comes pretty close to perfection with Townshend, Moon and Entwistle. Never had much time for Daltrey's vocals though.
They also pioneered the use of synth sequncers on stuff like Baba O'Riley and Wont Get fooled Again.
They had their daft ideas and embarassments and curates eggs like Tommy - but Townshend should be given credit for continually seeking to push the limits of what the band could do - rather then settle for staying in the musical comfort zone.
They should have called it a day after Moon died though. Everything since then has been pretty dire.
Loved their early stuff - the first album is great - they were really fresh and different.
I was lucky enough to see them live twice in the mid 60's and actually got to meet them as my friend did a music page for her school magazine and she blagged us a backstage visit
Didn't really like Tommy much and never kept up with anything they did afterwards.
