The 'What did Materazzi say to Zidane?' thread

Ref spoke to the assistant refaree then gave the card. He wasnt going to until his assistant caught his attention. Just before it Buffon was having a go at the assistant for not getting involved.

Irrespective of what was said, Zidane will almost certainly say it was a racial slur. It is perhaps possible or maybe even likely but we will never know, and to be honest Zidane should be in a court answering charges of assault. Irrespective of what was said.

I don't think it can be TV evidence.

1) I imagine it's against the rules.
2) Seeing as they are miked up, surely if they were surreptitiously using TV replays they can tell the referee without him having to go speak to the assistant referee.

I think either the assistant referee did see or the fourth or fifth official saw it and informed the assistant referee.

It did seem strange. I thought Zidane was going to get away with it.

To have the referees in the highest profile game miss that incident would have been extremely embarrassing

I did wonder whether because of this they had been told of the incident by someone watching on TV to avoid the error being made, but looking at the referee's actions, I concluded that they probably hadn't.
fair points but why didn't the 4th or 5th official come over straight away:confused: as you would if you'd seen that surely? bit dodge if u ask me but then he had to be sent off for that. shame.

What was Zidane thinking though??? Insane ...

I favour the 'Slaphead' theory.. Think of it an entire playing career putting up with "Hey Baldy!" comments. - There's no bigger stage so Zidane thinks "Right, I'm going to get one of these fuckers. (  )."

Slapheads all over the world are appreciative of Zidane's actions tonight.

Sleep well Zidane - We all love you!!

:)

How about Materazzi saying...

"Your career will always be unfulfilled, as, unlike me, you will leave the game never having been good enough to ever wear the Royal blue of Everton"

It's difficult to tell watching on TV as you can't see everyone at the same time.

I think the action focussed more on the referee than the assistant. I'm only guessing that the other officials spoke to the assistant referee and wouldn't know when that happened.

Perhaps the assistant had told the ref over the microphone and that the ref was waiting for things to calm down on the pitch before going to the assistant to confirm what he had been told.

Reminiscent of Schmeichel having to be protected from Wright at Highbury in 96 - Zizou don't get angry like that for nothing.

Anyone else heard the world champions being booed by the crowd before?

As for the man himself....well, here's some of his better moments.

you mean those bottling gobshites Gerrard & Carragher? So that's why they shit it on penalties--couldn't hear the refs whistle? Or were they on what Peter Giraffe's girlfriend is allegedly on?? Is that why Fowler returned to tantrum towers? ;)

Oh, don't you just love the sour grapes coming from the North Americans :D :D

Thanks for the insight into the way you north Americans really think Johnny, always good for a laugh :D :D

I recall once hearing about a time when Zidane was younger, playing district level football I think, when he was fouled quite badly and after he got up, play had moved on and the player who fouled him was on the other end of the pitch. Apparently Zidane walked very calmly over to where the player was, and equally calmly .....headbutted him.

That is a level of cold bloodedness that you don't see very often. It might also explain why he is so good at penalties.

It also takes a 'special' (in the French rather than the English meaning of the word) kind of player to mark his farewell professional appearance in a World Cup final in that way.

I reckon that back in the Arabic quarter of his hometown of Marseilles, he'll be revered even more because of this.

Zidane to self: "If I butt this guy I will get sent off and France will lose. Then those nice guys from Palermo will come back and give me the money".

My money's on something racist. Wasn't it Materazzi last year who mouthed off at Marc Zoro when he walked off the pitch in disgust at monkey chants by Inter fans?

I don't think we'll ever find out. Materazzi won't tell and Zidane isn't exactly media friendly at the best of times.

Innit, me and my French flatmate were shouting at the telly in French :( :D

I reckon it was summat racist too. Zizou has a short fuse but he really shouldn't have done that. It was rather nasty (although me and mate laughed after the 7th replay :o )

What a terrible way to end his career. He'll always be remembered for being a fine player though, if also a short tempered one too.

Iemanja - me too..

Agreed. I somehow think he'll be remembered for more than just that one boneheaded move. He had a great career.

Zidane just did what the French do when things arent going their way - he had a hissy fit :p
If it was 'terrorist' then a head butt was a mild reaction. As with Cantona before him he'd be quite justified in taking direct action against racism :)

'If' being the operative word. I'll wait to see what the players themselves say rather than a post on a messageboard quoting 'the word on the street in Paris'.

Its not the first time Zidane has lost it.
