thats not really fair, as they were originally a self obsessed baggy group ('get a piece of the action' was a moderately good single), who then when britpop came about turned into a really dull 'authentic 60s english r and b' group.

I dunno - you could blame Weller for that turnaround seeing as two of OCS were in his band for the Wild Wood tour onwwards.

I liked the Jam but as for his solo stuff...all I can say is "Peacock Suit"

ahh ok the wild wood tour was '94, but there was a nacient mod revival in 93/94

The Jam - essential listening. Buy the box set!
Style Council - I liked it well enough at the time, but 'Hmm' 20 years later.
Weller Solo - I think I have all the albums and love 'em.

The boy done good.

And whatever happened to Tracie?

I have this in my vinyl collection, she was quite cute in that hat :)

He's a pompous twit and he looks like Rod Stewart's mum with that new hair.

But I loved the Jam and despite the Observer-magazine-ness of his solo career I do think he's got a fantastic soulful voice.

The Jam were a very great band, I liked bits and pieces of the Style Council, most of the solo stuff has passed me by except Wildwood (the song), which I liked.

I don't know whether he's a wanker, but I don't think much of the Quentin Crisp-style scarves he wears occasionally.

er

Zzzzzzzz

huh? wha?

Oh, Weller, yeh he's Zzzzzzzz

The Jam were ok, one or two classic singles, overall ok.
The Style Council were just about ok, no classic anything
Wild Wood, the single was quite good
Weller is ok but nothing all that Zzzzz

Weller once went walking in Woking with a sign about his neck. Sign said 'how can I be a revivalist, I'm only 18?' or something. I think that was the most interesting thing he did apart from Town Called Malice and Going Underground. And Eton Rifles and Start and Zzzzzzz

Liked The Jam stuff at the time but don't listen to it now. Also like some of his solo stuff. Saw him live a couple of years ago with Jools Holland guesting and he was good.

"Paul Weller is a wanker, but I liked some of the Jam's stuff, though by no means all of it (some was shite), but I wouldn't listen to it now." [ ] tick.

You forget the he's God option

Yes, where is it?

If I were to get all Nick Hornby-esque & nerdy & do lists, it would be a dead heat between Weller & Julian Cope for Favourite Male Solo Artist.

Sadly a Weller fan. Like Jam/Council and the majority of solo stuff. The Style Council crap  'You're the best thing'/My ever Changing moods' are classics. Cafe Bleu is seriously underrated imo.

I'm with DC. He's not a wanker. The Jam weren't Britpop in the way that Oasis & OCS were. They loved American soul and funk and weren't constrained by what had gone before. Style Council were a fantastic band
but his fans just wanted the Jam. The cover version of Joe Smooth's Promised Land is one of the best ever.
