the way amy winehouse sings

So you think after a mediocre and unfocussed debut album and a largely brilliant 2nd album, you're in a position to assess she's the best ever?

I mean, suit yourself, like, but I think that's bobbins :D

While Amy Winehouse may not deserve the 'ultimate superlative' perhaps she could be accorded the penultimate superlative. ;)

And what role did 1950's débutantes have in the development of the choral arts.
Not a lot, I suspect.
Now, the oral arts, in the course of their search for a husband, on the other hand...:D
I thought that they just danced once their card was filled. Of course if they did try to sing, it would only be in black and white.
I suspect that cheesy has mental images of bouffant chanteuses in evening gowns singing torch songs, and "1950s debutantes" was the closest approximation she could come up with. ;)

You can talk in extremes all you want, doesn't make the statement any less bobbins. And who mentioned Aretha Franklin? :D

no VP, you hit the nail on the head by saying she is paying homage to her heroines - caricature might have been to strong a word i agree.

Because she's still hit and miss. Some of her stuff works beautifully, some doesn't.

She might be your "best ever", but based on what criteria? Surely you don't expect people to agree with you when you haven't even set out why beyond a vague reference to debutantes and caricature?

This thread has made me put on Back to Black which I've had for a while and never listened to. So far, it's really good.

In fact, it's fucking brilliant, especially the title track.

There is no cheeky irony.

i cant believe you dont get the irony. Its drenched in the performance. But the sentiments are straight from the heart which makes it unique.

no i dont expect people to agree with me. Not at all.

I suppose it depends what you're judging her against. I mean, if the baseline is Joss Stone, or even (Satan help us) Katie Melua...

:D

Your two statements contradict one another.

I'm not saying that you expect people to agree with you.

I'm saying that unless you set out how you've measured Amy Winehouse to be "the best ever", unless you indicate what your scale of "bestness" is, people are UNABLE to work out whether they disagree or agree with your statement.

which implies you DO expect me to agree with you.

You're not overly consistent, are you?

nah it doesnt. I cant understand you dont see the same irony I do because it screams out at me in abundance but if you dont, you interpret it differently, and thats ok.

oh stop it. this isnt some clinical exam here. its just music, and its about instinct for me and spontaneity.

Stop what? If you actually bothered to articulate your thoughts better, people wouldn't have to fish around trying to work out what the smeg you're on about.

Has anyone claimed that it is?
its just music...
Music is never "just music", unless you've no soul and tin ears.
...and its about instinct for me and spontaneity.
In which case surely you should be attending free jazz concerts and not listening to those notoriously non-spontaneous cultural artefacts otherwise known as "music recordings"?

Alternatively, I'll offer you the bongo-bashing and guitar strumming group on the terrace opposite ours with the out-of-tune woman trying to sing sevillanas and flamenco. It's spontaneous, it's instinctive, it's shit.
They can clap without fucking it up, so it ain't all bad.

~I cant wait to hear her first ever duet live of valerie with ronson at this months Brits!!!! lets hope she aint tooooo cained!!

the performance is a mass of contradictions IMO, which is precisely what makes it special.
