The veil: now it's getting silly.

I was watching my sister teach my nephew that a word ended in 'th' not 'f' yesterday. She got him to watch how your mouth moves differently to pronounce the two sounds.

I'm sure you can learn to pronounce words properly without being able to see someone's mouth but the fact is, having learned languages both ways, I know it's easier and faster to get it right if you can watch someone's mouth move.

You seem to be under a misconception about the case. The teaching assistant was not wearing her veil in the classroom with the kids in general. She would only wear it when male colleagues were in the room or male parents were around.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of the issue, the intervention of the prime minister is politically motivated as is Jack Straws sudden discovery of the issue.

I'm not under a misconception at all - she worked with male teachers. What's your point? That the school should ensure that she doesn't have to teach with men to protect her right to wear this to work?

I'm not interested in Jack Straw or Bliar either. I do wish those of you who are defending her would stop pointing out the motivations of politicians on this issue - it doesn't make the issue any less valid for discussion.

I haven't read all 25 pages of this, but I thought she DID teach wearing it????

In her brief career at the school (three weeks), Ms Asmi worked with two male teachers. She wore the shroud in class.

Straw and Blair and Brown and the rest of them are a bunch of wretched Islamophiles who have now decided to express their slight doubts about the full-ninja look in English schools. They think the ninja look impedes the acceptance, promotion and 'celebration' of Islam that they (and the Social Workers) want.

I'm a little puzzled by a Social Worker objecting to 'politically-motivated' comments. Should everyone check with the Muslim Brotherhood (MAB) to find out the Correct Line before commenting?

Azmi got her view of the face veil from the hardline Tablighi Jamaat group. Its Mufti in Dewsbury, Yusuf Sacha, told her it's obligatory.

A colleague of Sacha, who did not want to be named, said that the cleric teaches at the Tablighi mosque in Dewsbury, which has become the organisation’s European headquarters.

Mohammad Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, two of the London bombers, are said to have been regular worshippers there.

From today's Sunday Times: Veil teacher was obeying a fatwa

Tablighi Jamaat is the bunch of Mohammedans planning to build a mega-mosque in east London.

Guardian (some weeks ago): Battle to block massive mosque

Ken Islamingstone supports the plan, of course.

(and what is so very special about cycling)?

have you tried cycling with a great piece of flowing garment? that will get in the chain and pedals and everything. at least, I suppose, if it's black, they won't have to worry about the grease.
