    Messi won it then :hmm:

I am not sure he deserves it to be honest. Great player no doubt and (despite apparently not being at top fitness) without him Argentina would probably not have made the final.

Not sure who I would award it to. There are half a dozen players who I think really shone in the tournament and Messi is up there, just not my number one.

    Who do we think?

    Rodriguez was my first thought.
Not sure why Messi won it, I would put Mascherano ahead of him.

I think the player of the tournament should play for the winning side, and nobody did more than Phillip Lahm did for Germany - he doesn't score goals or do much that gets him noticed but he's the captain, he played every minute, in different positions, and only Neuer in goal is as indispensible as he is to that team.

Other than him then Rodriguez is the obvious choice, but he'll be happy with the Golden Boot anyway.

Sprocket. Regret, transience and disillusioned fortitude..

Messi wasn't even the best Argentinian. Mascherano by far more effective for them. Rodriguez for me, or even Manuel Neuer.

Should be schweinsteiger. Messi? That's likely just his corporate sponsors demanding that their pony gets a rosette.

I mentioned goalkeepers, but then remembered that they have their own competition.

Yes. As Mark Lawreson remarked, the Golden Glove trophy looked like "Thing" from the Addams Family.

James Rodriguez didn't play beyone the quarter final stage, but then I barely noticed Messi beyond that stage either.

When exactly were the votes cast, and by whom? These trophies were presented very promptly after the final finished, which suggests votes had already been cast beforehand. It should probably have gone to one of the Germans. I can't help feeling Messi got it just because of his repuation. Or possibly becasue it was voted for by FIFA delegates who didn't really know who the other candidates were.

As do outfield players. There is absolutely no reason to exclude goalies from the Golden Ball, and it's ludicrous that FIFA included none (but then, we all know that FIFA is ludicrous). Tho probably not as ludicrous as giving the award to Messi, and not even having Rodriguez in the top three.

...? The Golden Boot is just for scoring the most goals, not for how well they played (bit of presumption on my part that that's what you meant, obviously).

If anything, there shouldn't be a Golden Glove award and 'keepers should be recognised in the Golden Ball nominations like any other outfield player. But of course, very few defenders ever get nominated, let alone win, the Golden Ball - somewhat understandably it's the attacking players which get the most attention, just like it always is with football and most other sports.

    close enough

Oliver Kahn actually won it in 2002, so goalies clearly are eligible. Just have to add it as another stupid FIFA decision.

Was there a separate Golden Glove award in 2002?
