The Urban Beat Mangler Competition - Sample Submission Thread

Put five wav files in, most of my samples are rex or aiff and have no idea how to convert them so these ones will have to do. No beats or bass I'm afraid, just FX and vox. Might be a slight copyright issue with a couple but I doubt George Lucas is a lurker.....

After listening to the above I've now decided to tweak it a bit. So, hang fire on that uploaded "final mix".

Are you refering to mine?

Any feedback would be nice, I don't know any guitar players in RL anymore, so anytime I can get some unbiased feedback is nice. I have a friend I bombard with stuff but I don't think she has ever said she didn't like something.

The guitar sound of yours is excellent and I'm using it extensively ( I've added some waves enigma affect to it). I just want to add another of my own - maybe a lead break.

cool will look forward to hearing it, tho i am not sure which peice you are using, might come as a nice surprise.

If you like guitar playing, you should check this out, won't be of any use to you, but as a guitar player you will definately appreciate it i think.

In my own defense, its bloody hard to play, like the hardest thing i ever played, so yeah its not perfect.

That's really good. Love the production, the bass line fits well (alway's a difficult instrument to get right in the mix).

I have a problem:

People who've sent stuff in by Yousendit, the download have now expired (after the 7 days), maybe someone who already has them should send them in an email or something??

EDIT: The ones that are a problem so far are the first 3 - 'mc5_guitar-riff', 'lalala' and 'jodal - dirty pixi'

Thats a single guitar MC5, no Bass included, just me and a guitar. No Dubs either.

Right, when its finished sending there should be a whopping 10 samples from me up there, if thats too many let me know, just giving a bit of diversity and varying bpm's.

I'll upload a neatly packed .rar file tonight containing ALL the samples in it. That should make things easier for everyone.

Once that is up we can start beat mangling.

Note: Would people prefer me to use .rar or .zip?

Well i've only uploaded 5 since whenever i try and send the other 5 my gmail account just hangs  Ah well, you've got some more beats and bass anyhoo

(Don't really care personally over .rar or .zip)

OK people. Please don't upload anymore samples. The file complete_sample-package.rar has arrived in the gmail account and as you might be able to tell from the name its a complete package of all the samples uploaded.

Remember you have to use all of them.

Errr... Just downloaded the .rar file and my samples aren't in there! :(
Why do you need your own samples?

Just kidding, sorry, my mistake, I've sorted it.

Did I miss anyone else's?

Oh and it would be great if you could call out on this thread which samples are yours so I can sort the index on the 1st post.

Ok, here goes...

This is a new format music competition, which goes something like this:

1. Anyone can upload a sample to this email address: [email protected]
2. Anyone can then download those samples and try and make a tune out of them. (PM me for the Gmail password)
3. These tunes are entered into competition and the winner chooses the next theme.

Easy, right? The idea is meant to get the whole of Urban involved because anyone can upload samples and it’s going to be great fun seeing how people use the various samples.

The rules are as follows:

1. Submitting Samples
Anyone can submit a sample.
The deadline for submitting a sample is Sunday 20th November.
All samples will adhere to the theme.
All samples will be recorded at minimum 128kbs.
All samples will be copyright free.
All samples will not be longer than 15 seconds.
All samples will be submitted in .wav format.
Please announce your sumbitted sample on this thread e.g. "Hiccup - monkey_clapping.waw"

2. Downloading samples from gmail address
Anyone can download the samples.
PM me for the password to get access to Gmail inbox.

3. Making the tune.
All the samples have to be used at least once.
No outside samples are allowed.
The entire sample does not have to be used.
The deadline for entering the tune will be Sunday 4th December.

4. Entering Competition
Only 1 entry per person.

5. Voting
Voting for your own tune is frowned upon.
The deadline for voting is December 18th.

Hints and Tips

1. To upload a sample either send it from your email or use www.yousendit.com and send it to the email address above.
2. The samples can be anything. For example; Guitar riffs, Vocals, Drums, Basses, Monkey Noises, or the sound of your Knee Creaking. The harder and more obscure samples will make for more interesting tunes.
3. If you do ACCIDENTALLY use copyrighted material, make sure that you have fucked with it to the extent that it is unrecognisable.
4. To download the samples, get the password by PM'ing me. Log into gmail at the following address: www.gmail.google.com and download the samples. Towards the end of the deadline there will be one zipped file that contains all the samples.

I hope all of the above makes sense! If not, let me know.

The theme is... for lack of a better one... Christina would'a been proud:
"Dirty"
Good luck to everyone, happy up- and down-loading and get beat mangling. :D

I don't think there's a time limit on it (unless they've put one on) since i've been using my evaluation copy for years without paying

I have some questions regarding the tune building part of this jodal.

All the samples have to be used at least once.

Thats a lot of samples, thats 16 audio tracks to hold them all. My machine will likely start strugging when I go over 8. Is there any chance you can lighten this to only having to use 50% of the samples?

No outside samples are allowed.

This include drum machines, drum kits etc? Including midi sounds, or live instruments?

The entire sample does not have to be used.

How much manipulation are we allowed, does the sample have to sound like the original sample, or can we stick it thru effects until we get a sound we like?

Thanks just working on it and not sure whats allowed and not.

what program you using fong?

use acid pro, i had about 500 samples on one of my mixes and the computer is good, but it aint a monster or anything

I was using Nuendo. I think I used acid pro in the past, will have to check it out again. I don't generally use a lot of samples so not used to it, my music is mainly live instrument and a couple of midi tracks for padding.

i`ve never heard of nuendo

acid is for loops, but it rocks loops, you can pretty much do what you like with em....

Oddly it handled 16 just fine, maybe I am just thinking back to the last time used that many samples, it was awhile ago.

Right Click Save As

All 16 are in there somewhere, but so is a complete midi drum track I added for backbone. Nothing else tho, no other samples or instruments. Some of them samples are impossible to tell, as they are so manipulated but they are all there.

Its a bit trippy and well I not exactly polished like I should. Just sorta finished and thought, that will do.

Nuendo is produced by Steinberg who also develop Cubase. Yamaha recently bought the company. Nuendo is used more for mastering adding MIDI and overdubs. It is also useful for video.

Acid Pro is not just for sampling. It's a great tool for laying down live tracks. MIDI cababilty was added some time ago. It's better to multi-track with mono tracks (less drain on the cpu) double tracking some for stereo (pan hard right and left).

Anyone tried Ableton Live?
