The Unthanks

The Unthanks perform The Testimony of Patience Kershaw

That string arrangement is very Eleanor Rigby, isn't it? I'm still ambivalent about the new album, tbh. That "Lucky Gilchrist" song is awful. But then there's "Nobody knew she was there" and "Annakie Gordon." Hmmm. Nothing to match the visceral power of "Whitethorn," though. I hope I'm wrong, but I think they peaked with The Bairns. Although my absolute favourite of theirs, "John Dead" is on their first.

bit premature to say a band's peaked when they've only made a few albums, surely?

anyone heard Jackie Oates (another former Unthank) album Hyperboreans? Bit more middle of the road than Unthanks, but an interesting listen. title track written by the marvellous Alasdair Roberts.

I've been playing the 'Tender Coming' album quite a lot and loving it, but the 'Lost February' track was really bugging me as I couldn't work out who it sounded like.,

I've worked it out now - it's very reminiscent of fellow North Eastern musician Paddy McAloon's "Trawl the Megahertz".

If you like the Unthanks you might like Emily Portman's debut album "The Glamoury".

Me, I don't really like either. Cath & Phil Tyler, Mary Hampton or Sharon Krauss are more my thing.
