she seems to make a habit of that sort of thing in hughes movies: who could fail to gag at her attempts to 'beautify' ally sheedy in 'the breakfast club'?

she was fine to start with, you fool!

 :D

i preferred ally before the makeover

"Life moves pretty fast, if you dont stop & take a look around once in a while you could miss it" great quote from a great film.
And krs please dont insult the delectable Mia Sara again. Carole Vorderman lookalike indeed  :p
So, Ferris Bueller closely followed by Planes, Trains etc & Uncle Buck. But with a special mention for Weird Science.

Last time I saw the lovely Mia Sara she was starring in a film about fencing with Amadeus and either Eric Stoltz or Roberts I forget which.

sixteen candles

ferris bueller's day off
pretty in pink
some kind of wonderful

i like these

don't like the rest

You're out on Some Kind of Limb there, Marty - dubious taste or trailblazing voguer? Hmmm...

It's the predictable result so far :p

didn't really like any of them, but Breakfast Club was less annoying than FBDO

Do you think Emilio Estevez's stoned routine is what really happens if you get an American Jockstrap caned?

That bit always worried me.

Uncle Buck, purely for the microwaving socks bit. Guidance for modern man.

Like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller too.

The Breakfast Club wasn't one of my favourites, but it seems to be pretty popular around here; maybe because you're all a bunch of JDs.

I do agree with you English about the charms of Molly Ringwald. A lot of people here are kind of ambivalent about her.

If Hughes did Christmas Vacation, did he do the original Vacation?

well, he wrote the original one ('national lampoon's vacation'), which was directed by harold ramis, who also wrote 'national lampoon's animal house', and co-wrote the 'european vacation' (directed by amy heckerling, who was also responsible for helming 'fast times at ridgemont high' and later 'clueless').

i included 'xmas vac' fairly arbitrarily as one of his minor works, but i wanted a fairly even spread across time, and as xmas was his last natlam involvement i felt it was probably the best for the job. feel free to castigate my chocie though :D

THe original Vacation is a classic, with dead Grandma strapped to the station wagon, and Randy Quaid's hillbilly family.

[Tasteful pic inserted by me, i could have gone for the swimsuits but she deserves better]

man that is so tough..
i can get it down to Uncle Buck, Home alone, Planes, Trains.., Ferris Bueller and Vacation.

from there.. i dunno. i think i'll give it to uncle buck.
no i wont. Planes Trains and Automobiles.

I love John Hughes teen movies, they bring a tear to my eye as I remember my lost youth... ;) Its been a difficult decision but it in the end I think I have to choose the Breakfast Club, it really sums up the whole brat pack movie era for me.

Most of his movies are set in the same (fictional) Chicago Suburb of Shermer. Del from Planes, Trains and Automobiles lives two doors from Samantha Baker (16 Candles) who knows Ferris Bueller who went to Shermer High School as did the protagonists of the Breakfast Club.

Good article celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Breakfast Club here

hughes alert!

'national lampoon's vacation' - hughes-scripted, ramis-directed - is on channel 5 at 6.10pm today

the wallyworld odyssey, chevy chase in fine form, and beverley d'angelo

Ooh, I do like to drag an old thread up. Just watched Ferris Buellers Day Off and it is still great. For a film based in and certainly of its time. It hasn't dated.
