the uk's newest submarine, hms audacious, has a surprising omission...

well if you mean over priced and doesnt work then you'd be right

Honestly likesfish, you're so behind the curve.

BAEs stuff is overpriced but it does work - just not to the degree the customer thought they had specified. The clever thing is that the customer them pays BAEs even more to bring the programme up to the capability they thought they were buying in the first place...

Buy shares in BAEs and you'll not die poor.

With regard the comment -

her sonar is said to be so powerful it can detect ships leaving harbour in New York City from a listening point below the waters of the English Channel, 3,000 nautical miles away.

I can do that from here using - https://www.marinetraffic.com/....................... for a tenth of the cost.

But I bet it at least has a headphone jack....

What? They halved in price over the five years that followed their 2007 high. And it's only in the last year that they've managed to consolidate above that level. It's a fucking dismal stock and I should know as I own plenty of the garbage. It's just not a well managed company despite its huge captive market.

Heico (who do a lot of engine support for the USAF/USN) and Elbit (who even managed to sell the Qataris gear made in Israel) are the standout defence stocks IMO.

I used to use the stock regularly as a up down trading daily on points but its up to high now

Most modern subs offer similar specs and capabilities. Astute might be slightly more advanced due to being the newest, but it is not a game changer by any means. It will be very difficult to detect, but then so will be enemy attack subs targetting the British fleet. Bearing in mind that attack subs are not primarily designed to hunt each other (though of course they can do), but ballistic missile subs and surface ships.

I'm a pacifist, anti war, and feel patriotic about once a year. But why do I feel a tingle all over when I see some of our hardware? What's that about?

Not a pacifist, but I am also a bit of military hardware enjoyer. Years ago I once squatted a place that used to be the Bahrain embassy, and among the pile of mail behind the front door were copies of magazines such as Aviation Weekly and Military Technology. Fucking jackpot, I still have them today.

more details:

That article also links to another interesting one, about the tradition among some submarine crews to fly the Jolly Roger pirate flag as they return to port- which was started by the British Navy
