The U.S. is going tits up....

Radio Beijing has been sending language lessons our way for dog's years.....

Personally I think Chinese is a difficult language to learn. Its such a tonal language that similar sounds will mean quite different things.

I think you're right, I can speak fench and german but they are so similar to english, well english is derived from them both, that it is hardly more than practice. Learning a tonal language is very intimidating; for me it would require living there I think.:)

I tried, but couldn't get the hang of it. I didn't write for the free instructional materials Radio Beijing will send you, but maybe I should have.

Romance languages are easy. They're all so similar that if you know one or two you can usually figure another one out.

Start practicing your Mandarin.
Chinas problems may be pretty grim as well. It is an export driven economy about to see its biggest customers go on a servere savings drive and see its holdings of US stocks, cash and bonds take a turn south.

They need to either turn themselves into an economy that can consume what it manufactures and raise general living standards or experiance what the word deflation means to an industrialised economy.

You know, McCain just doesn't look that healthy, but he could win. If he died, she'd be president.

Maybe this is the form that the Antichrist will take.:)

I used to think it would be Schwarznegger, but now I'm not so sure...

Apparently in Santa Barbara, California, they have a large parking lot in the town, where they allow middle class people who've gone bankrupt, lost their homes etc, to park their cars and sleep at night.

The problem is, that if you don't speak mandarin in the first place, you have no way of knowing what the radio program is about.

The signal they broadcast our way is in English. The language lessons come on about noon here, so the programming must be tailored for the US market. I figure they're just softening us up for our new Chinese overlords.

I was sort of being facetious....:)

As for overlords, I think the advance shock troops will be the 500,000 recent chinese immigrants who are now residing in the Vancouver area....:D

so what lesson do we learn here? is it the fact that every time the US govt de-regulates a major industry they fuck it up? in the long term it creates less competition, higher prices and more fraud....
