The two decade timeslice, what were you doing?

1997 - Just finishing off my GCSEs and planning a cheap and cheerful bus trip to Germany with some mates from school - this was pre- cheap flights revolution so the only option we could afford was a 30hour coach ride.

2007 - Just moved from Cardiff, to Sheffield (with a brief period in Devon between the two). Finally called an end to 8 years of HE with a proper job, which seems to be working out well (as far as I can tell after a week and a half). Sheffield seems a really nice place too (see above). Would have like to have had my PhD viva by now though - looks like it's gonna be September before it all gets sorted.

1997: Whoa! So much going on for me in that year. Marriage break up, going to live in massive squatted block with really sorted posse and soundsystem.
Kids during the week, squat party benders every weekend, often active in squatting the actual building, working the door, bar etc, having great adventures..
Tail end of Newbury...then towards the summer, helping organise some memorable political spectaculars  which was extreamly intense and absorbing...Got to know so many people... Having the time of my life really...

2007: Finally got my own council flat, live quietly with my kids, got one extra baby  :) Still like to party ;)
Just sitting my GCSEs that I fucked up as a teenager so's I can finally get a proper job like and join the rat race (bit scared about this)..
Happier than I've ever been, but a lot less glamorous....:D

1997
The rate of visits-to-A&E with the ex-wife are starting to ramp up, I'm on increasing doses of antidepressants which are fucking up my stomach and eating. I've been running my own company for about 3 years, and have been sent off to Dubai for a fortnight where I get stuck for an extra six weeks because of project overruns, and run out of ADs, have some kind of mini breakdown where I end up crying my face off in an office of about 20 people, who all pretend not to notice (not sure if this is  or  ). What I didn't know was that it hadn't got as bad as it was going to get - I had 5 more years of Her Indoors' increasingly severe and frequent OD attempts to come, several near misses that resulted in her ending up in Intensive Care, a false dawn when we moved house, and a catastrophic case conference with the CMHT where I got accused of drug dependency, alcoholism, and causing her illness. Which was all the lead-in I needed for...

2007
Living in South West Wales, having left my marriage 4 years ago (and been divorced for 3), left antidepressants, depression behind, just about to complete a degree in Integrative Counselling, just about spent the proceeds of the house sale, and just about to wonder how the hell I'm going to earn a living, but happy, fulfilled, and well underway with the personal development... Everything mostly  or :D.

1997: Eighteen years old, living in East Yorkshire and doing my A-levels - in theory, at least. In practice I didn't care much about academic stuff and was far more interested in drinking, smoking dope, pissing about in cars and generally being a narrow-minded small-town teenager. Eventually I was hauled in by the headmaster and head of sixth form and told to pull my socks up or I wouldn't be getting into Durham University. I wasn't especially bothered about that since I didn't see the point of it and was only going because I'd been told I should, but I did put a bit more effort in after that, and scraped the grades I needed.

2007: Had a brilliant time at university and ended up getting very into my degree subject, before moving to Hull and doing a masters and a PhD. Came out at 21. Now living in London, with an academic job. Hate London but like my job, so I'm here for the time being. Fed up with being single.

I decided to do a 3 decade timeslice as 1997 was so uneventful

1987 –Whoa!! Left school with 3 good a’ levels, left home to move into squat with my b/f, took a ‘year out’ job at an oil company..bleaugh! lotta partying and clubbing, got my own flat in Blackheath, hanging out in S.E London with the ‘crew’, Hip-Hop, Funk, African Jazz, House, Reggae….
Then went to University...what a come down.

1997 Unplanned move from job I loved in music research to researching and selling footage clips, disillusioned with the music scene, saving to buy a flat…I wasn’t particularly happy at this time of my life.

2007, New lovely house with massive garden, good job as a producer for new media programming, VJ working with some great bands such as 4Hero, Dennis Rollins etc, meeting lovely people, planning and plotting for my future, going out more and having fun! Am 37! How did that happen???

97 - working for a housing association, living with mrs21, we bought a flat together:cool:

07 - working for a housing association (a different one, about 5 jobs between the 97 one and this one) living in the flat we bought in 97:)
