The Tudors - 9pm BBC2

Our local football (Soccer) ground in my home suburb was called The Boleyn Ground. A reasonably famous team. West Ham United.

So named because the area was once forest, and our 'Enry liked to hunt there and shag Anne Boleyn in his secluded lodge.

This is at least partly where my interest in Tudor history came from - because of all the blokes in my area going to the Boleyn to watch a match, and me having a vague recollection of Anne Boleyn, then going to look it up.

You takes your education wherever you finds it!

Just about over the whiff of re-packaged Marks and Spencer 'homemade cakes' in ye olde National Trust English Heritage historical-U-like retail commodity outlet, where your custom is valued.

See, I told you we copied.

You mean Marks and Sparks? So I could go there and maybe buy myself a tshirt that says "I married 'enry and kept me head?'

Impressed you with my use of the local lingo, didn't I? ;)

Indeed.

Such terms and references have a tendency to require the elucidation of lengthy, and frequently tendentious electronic correspondence with the cousins.

This will save a lot of time if you stick around.

Hang on, I'll have a response as soon as I can find a dictionary/translation site ....

Wouldn't bother.

I'm pissed and I made it up.

Sunday afternoon is when Mr Pompous comes out to play:)

Hell, I'm impressed anyway. I couldn't come up with all that after I've had a few.

Sunday is a good drinking day. I'd join you if I didn't have homework to do later.

haha, yeah, I finally made it to the 12th grade!

Nope, I made the grand decision to finally go to university and get a degree at the ripe old age of 38.

Starting to think I'm fucking insane now, remembering all the reasons I hated school in the first place.

No, not really. Hasn't been too bad yet. Just a big adjustment. Not only can I not drink on school nights, but I can't drink the nights before school because I work all day and then it's class til 10:30 pm. Not to mention the homework, which I'm totally putting off and using this place as an excuse.

I have started to read historical fiction books on the Boleyn's. I liked it more than I thought I would.

If they are by Phillipa Gregory then they aren't that historically accurate.;) That said I liked her books, they mightn't have stayed true to exact historical facts but they were very textured and gave a good sense of the period. For accurate Tudor fiction Allison Weir's Innocent Traitor about Jane Grey is quite good.

Yep, it was The Boleyn Inheritance.

Thanks, I will definitely check out Innocent Traitor. I mean, what's the point of reading historical fiction if it's not going to be accurate?

The Boleyn Inheritance is much more accurate than it's predecessor The Other Boleyn Girl and it seems like Gregory was trying to correct some of the falsities she alluded to in TOBG. I still sort of like the first one though, as I said it told a good story and painted a great picture of Tudor life. The Constant Princess about Catherine of Aragon's early life is enjoyable too.

Well i've nearly finished watching the second series and I seem to be alone in thinking it's actually quite good. I think the portrayal of Henry's personality is very believable, although of course he was rather fat in reality. As also was the rise and fall of Thomas More and Thomas Cromwell, very different men who both took the role of Chancellor and closest advisor to the king, but both ended up being beheaded by him.

My friend reckon they added a few plot details for dramatic effect, but in fact in some cases history was more dramatic even than in portrayed here. For example, Anne Boleyn's miscarriage that happened when she found Henry might be dead from a jousting accident in actual fact took place on the day of Queen Catherine's funeral

Peter O'Toole does a great pope in the second series
