The tripod trilogy - John Christopher

One on one? You're crazy.
I ordered this for my nephew who was having difficulty getting hold of them, decided to read them nefore i gave them to him:D really enjoying them despite them being really for kids i guess

confusingly there are 4 in the trilogy, one of which was a prequel which i think was written after the trilogy

When the Tripods Came

The White Mountains
The City of Gold and Lead
Pool of Fire

i've read nearly 3 of them in the last couple of days - they are about 200 pages each,

anyone else read them, did anyone see the tv series in the 80s, was it any good?

I have a vague recollection that the books were excellent and the TV series was good but not as good as the books. That's all I can really remember though.

I fucking love The Tripods. Watched the TV series, and was bitterly disappointed when they didn't adapt the third series. For some reason as a child I blamed Margaret Thatcher for this. I still bear a grudge. Bloody loved the books too. The prequel was OK, but didn't really add to the trilogy.

Tripods. Fuck yeah!

God that Tripods Trilogy was one of my favourite books as a child - I must've read it about 8 times.

It's wonderfully written, isn't it! Good that you still enjoyed it reading it with an older head on :)

I have it on DVD too - but they only made half of the book for some reason - they never even got into the City!

You can buy it on Amazon

it's on my amazon rental list:cool:

yay!

It's brilliant - I'm sure you will like the DVD. Even though it's really low budget and a bit crappily produced, it's still really quite creepy and atmospheric and very well acted.

I read the trilogy when I was younger, got them from the childrens library in Grimsby, so that'd have been about 30 years ago. The prequel hadn't been written then as far as I know.

From reading stuff on the net, the 2nd TV series is likely to be finally released on DVD soon. A pity that the series was cancelled before the 3rd part was done.

Except that we all know that - save a god like cinematic quirk of fate - it'll be a bitterly dissapointing CGI fest with the soul of the books ripped out and replaced by Matt Damon.

However, a TV remake in this day & age could be interesting and they could finish it this time.

I read the trilogy years ago but I was never aware of the prequel. I'll look out for a copy. I've read quite a lot of his other stuff. He's the first author to introduce me to the concept of dystopias and collapse of civilisation.

the prequel is basically back story, describes the tripods first coming, the way in which they infiltrated people's minds via the tv box...

Loved the books as a teen, they were what turned me on to Science Fiction. Never realised there was prequel.

it does add a lot to the story, quite an exciting chase to get away from them
