The tories on immigration

Labour used to spend stupid amounts chartering jets and hiring security to deport people, way more than it would have cost to keep people in the country for years. Stupid posturing bullshit publicity stunts aimed at looking like a tough regime, not for the attention of potential migrants but for the attention of the electorate. Definitely one of their low points.

I don't understand it. Surely the Tories should be seeing immigration as a source of income: "So you want to live and work here? That'll be £50K per person per year - wives and children extra - and a £50K per person deposit. Your deposit will be forfeit if you remain illegally. Your debit card, please..." :D

If you can buy a privileged education why not a fast track citizenship?

Your children will be next. Welfare is earned, not distributed on the basis of need. They've been chipping away at this for decades and are finally getting somewhere with it.

This includes in-work benefits too, right? So housing benefit, child support etc, potentially leaving whole families in poverty that have settled here for a few years, signed contracts for accommodation and so on. People will struggle on where they have to, do what they can. Kids will suffer.

Horrid, bullying politics. Has Miliband said 'me too!' yet?

Nope. Because no one in the media or 'opposition' party gives a fuck. It's a race to the bottom from here until the election.
A race to the bottom in which there are only losers.

For migrant workers, extreme work discipline enforced by the threat of starvation and homelessness if they put a foot wrong, with a side order of illegal super exploitation when employers realise they can take the piss out of people in precarious circumstances.

For those with British citizenship, competition with the people subject to that extreme work discipline, with all the downward pressure that implies in terms of their wages, conditions and rights at work.

Oh, and the added totally unconcealed discrimination that is making migrant workers ineligible for tax credits. Cause, you know, fuck them making a living for their families and kids.

Is ugly debate. To stop benefits for migrants, is that mean some British people wish to see people suffer, why give pain.

Gives unscrupulous landlords leverage to hike up rents to EU citizens - but a lot of smoke an mirrors over the UK leverage to negotitiate with the EU - just don't think UK has that much pull in the EU

Listening to World at One on R4, Nigel Farage said he thought making EU migrants ineligible for in-work benefits would be illegal discrimination according to EU rules. His motives are clearly to say nothing short of withdrawal would do, but it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Of course, it's all electioneering at this stage - this is what Cameron will do if he is still PM after next May.

Savile didn't distract enough attention, they've had to wheel out the unveiling of Jihad John instead. That should keep the tabloids tied up for a few days, right?

Yep; burial, exhumation and re-burial..all in one morning.

At least we now have a hierarchy of distractions - Cliff, Savile, head-chopping Jihadi. They'll be keeping the nuclear option of Prince Harry's parenthood in reserve.
